do you get this by calling them? Or does it happen automatically
depending on your area?

usually happens automatically

they have press releases and send emails out (plus, i think the upgrade shows up as a notice on your next bill)

your local cable company does it for all of its customers in the area it serves.

for example, time warner in New York City upgrades for all its customers. but each time warner division is not the same company, for example, while NYC has upgraded, other time warner's around the nation may have not

I didn't even realize I got the upgrade. Upstream is still lousy (384KB/s) and will always be.

yes. earthlink cable customers use time warner and Comcast. So if road runner gets it, so goes e/l

SE Wisconsin (Milwaukee, Waukesha, Kenosha, etc) all got updated yesterday afternoon. Probably need to power cycle the modem though (I did).

I'm going to check tonight, but I'm more worried about the upload speed. My connection is going from 3Mbps to 5Mbps down, but I have no idea what the u/l speed will be. Anyone know? (live in KC, KS area)

I will try this when I get home.

Woohoo!
FOr those of you with Time Warner in Houston, I think we got the upgrade.
I just power reset my modem, and went from 1.7mbps to 4.7mbps.
Sweet!
