I yanked my Audigy Gamer (1) in favour of my onboard sound - I really couldn't tell the difference. My cpu's running a bit hotter, I always wondered if this was the reason. For Xmas I got some decent value speakers, the Altec Lansing 3151s. They sound ok for a non-audiophile!

Why? onboard audio uses more CPU cycles then having the audigy board... Which would explain WHY your cpu is running hotter...

my CPU is running pretty hot too. It posts 48* C on boot up...maybe I should get a sound card just so it would run cooler and also free up some cpu resources.

Sounds like a lot of people are happy w/ Audigy 2. I'm not an audiophile so I guess it would sound pretty good to me. I probably wouldn't be able to tell the diff. from sound cards that are better for gaming or for regular music, etc.

Mine posts @ 48 too, 55 @ load. nothing to worry about I guess. Previously it was about 38 at post. Maybe I'll throw the Audy back in. I guess the idea of the CPU using *less* cycles when using onboard was a bunch of crap - that's what a few other forums had impled. I should know better than to go against AT's advice. Thanks guys.

M-Audio > SB Audigy 2 ZS ?

Having owned both paired with Klipsch Promedia 4.1's, the Audigy is better at games, the M-Audio has cleaner/warmer sound.

If you dont want to spend very much, you could buy the Chaintech AV-710 for like $25 which has the same Envy24 chip as the higher priced cards....

I still prefer the M-Audio, but the Chaintech works very well indeed.

I agree 100%! I own a Chaintech AV710 SC and it sounds great w/ my Klipsch Promedia 4.1 setup. Couldn't get a better card for the price!

M-Audio

ah...thanks.

hmm...a little pricey for me. Don't erally want to spend more than $75 for a sound card.

lol....
75 bucks will get you a 2 year old SB =P
ZS is 100 bucks+ and well worth it.

Uhmm...I guess you haven't been keeping up with prices.

Amazon has Audigy 2 zs (not value) for $84.xx

I can get that price -20% so that's like less than $70.

Then get a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. Usually around $50 can be found for less. Not necessarily the best for gaming (although not bad either), but definitely the best bang for the buck for music/mp3's.

I have Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1's. Got them for Christmas.
I asked all around what soundcard to run them on.
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz came up time and again.
I snagged the card here at FS/T for 25 bucks shipped.
I couldn't be more pleased.

Chaintech AV710 is worth a look.

Personally I'd ditch the Promedias & get some real speakers.

But that's just me.

Viper GTS

My audio setup will soon be Chaintech AV710>Rat Shack mini-mini IC>Rockhopper MINT>AudioTechnica ATH-AD7
