I just got scammed I think...

Ok, well I sold a JL audio 15in W6 subwoofer to my friends brother in maui for $100. I pulled it from my car about a year ago and it worked great, and its been boxed and un-used since then. As he was taking it from oahu to maui as a carry-on in the airplane, he put it through that baggage scanner/x-ray machine contraption. He called his brother and told him that when it went though, the machine acted all messed up. Well, he installed it in his car today, and called his brother here in oahu and said the sub was messed up, and that the voice coils were broken.

That sub was great, looked in perfect condition, and ran flawlessly. I have a feeling that im getting scammed as he wants the money back. I don't wanna ruin a friendship with my friend cause i won't refund his brothers money, but damn Im really angry over this!

Im not a speaker expert, and know very little about them, so if any of you guys know speakers, and the effect a airport screener machine can have on them, please let me know!

The only thing that I know about subwoofers is that you shouldn't put them near something magnetic, I don't know if anything will be broken physically, but the sub may not be functioning properly... who knows. Sh!tty situation though, good luck finding out the truth.

I dont think your friend would scam you unless he realy wasn't a friend to begin with. It probably really is messed up.

Its not my friend, its his little brother. I know my friend wouldn't, but his brother, thats a different story.

I would ask him to have it shipped back to you to check it out for yourself. Who knows what those things at the airport can screw up.

Tell him to mess with the wires a lot and to connect the positive and negative on the same terminal and see if it fixes the problem at all. Most likely its a scam and its his stupid fault for trying to carry the sub on the plane with him. Should have got some bubble wrap and threw it in a big box. I had just gotten an Alpine 12 inch sub a while back and while installing it not knowing how to bridge for more wattage I did some f*cked up sh*t and somehow the sub wouldnt work anymore so I disconnected the battery cables from teh battereh and et workedid.

If the speaker actually has a voice coil made of small wire it is possible that the glue that holds it to the voice coil has dried out and the wire has come loose. The way to tell is just push in on the surface of the cone and see if you feel a scratching against the coil.

Well, hes gonna send it back to me sometime this month so I can try to figure out whats wrong. To be honest, I never planned on using it again, so its not really a big loss, just disappointing is all. Thanks for the help all.
