This may sound a bit newbie but all of the sudden I can't access my school's website, but can access any other website I try. I've tried clearing cookies, temp internet files, and the University site loads fine on other people's computers. I'm using IE but I installed Opera and it does the same thing. I have removed all spyware too. Anyone ever had something like this happen?

Actually, being that you're on campus, you got owned by the INTRANET. Not the Internet.

I've seen this when a ISP is having DNS issues. Have you tried using the sites IP Address instead of it's URL?

www.ttu.edu is the site, i tried control+f5 but just gave me a blank screen instead of a "page cannot be displayed". i might have to call their tech people today.

*edit* How do i check my HOSTS file? and get the IP for the site instead of url? i just tried to ping it and it timed out all four times.

You say you "removed all spyware." Did you have some bad spyware, or just the usual tracking cookies and stuff?

You can find your HOSTS file by searching your Windows directory for a file called HOSTS (for Win2000 it's C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\Etc and the file is simply called HOSTS, open it with Notepad). Post the contents for us and let's see what it's got :)

here are the results of my hosts file:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Your HOSTS file is normal. Since the IP address of the site is 129.118.1.28, you could try adding a line to your HOSTS file so it's like this:

Does this link work for you?

http://129.118.1.1/

EDIT: NM, apparently you can't to the site via IP.

Hmmm. Here's a wild idea: try starting Windows in safe mode w/ networking and see if you can get to the web site that way. It might work; if it does, it would probably mean some other program (e.g. malware) is blocking your access.

I had this same problem recently, with two different situations and solutions (after having tried many things suggested by the fine members of this board):

1) on my old rig, i couldn't access http://wsj.com nor the microsoft update site via windows update, but i could access the latter through the link in the IE help menu. after updating IE, i was able to access both sites again.

2) on my new rig, which i just built last week, i wasn't able to access http://wsj.com nor http://belkin.com . it turned out to be the nforce drivers that came with my asus k8n-e deluxe mobo that has the nforce3 250gb chipset. once i uninstalled the drivers, i was able to get to both sites again. sounds random, i know...
