If you win - it is.
And, as already said, go ahead and proxy bid if you want to pay more than necessary for the item.Originally posted by: novasatori

It's irrelevant if you're WILLING to pay say, 20 bucks for something. Wouldn't you rather get it cheaper?
You often can if you snipe.

Why do people have such a hard time understanding that?
Proxy bidding will INFLATE the auction price when it isn't necessary.
Auction is currently at $20, you place a proxy bid of $50, someone else proxy bids at $45. Now the auctions current price is $45.
With sniping the auction could have ended at $21 with a last second snipe, assuming no other proxy bids were entered.
Sellers hate sniping.
Buyers love sniping.

Slightly flawed example, it should go like this:
Auction is at $20, you put in proxy bid at $50. Then another guy comes and bids 25, 35, 45 and maybe 55. you may win at $50 or lose at $55
Auction is at $20 you put in snipe for $50. Another guy comes, bids $25 and is the highest. You kill him in the last few seconds, winning at $30
