What branch are you in, and what's your MOS? A friend of mine just made Lance Corporal in the Corp a year out of high school. He just got sent to Afghanistan to deal with explosives, landmines I think.

I am in the Air Force.

Tech Controller (3C251)

Spent 3 years at Kadena (Okinawa) flying on AWACS. I retrained into Computer Geekdom (geing a geek already, it was cake).

Spent some time at Osan during exercises. It was fun. Mass quatities of booze. I am single. This is just getting better as I type!!

Staff Sergeant (E-5) here...making Tech next year.

Congratulations! I once had orders to Osan, also, but they were redlined. :( I had my orders for about 6 months and I was 2 weeks from departing when I received the redline. My AFSC was 81150 (Security Police) and I didn't have Air Base Ground Defense training. I was scheduled to go to the training for about 6 weeks and then onto Osan. However, the U.S.A.F. got real cheap and found some SPs who already had ABGD training and sent them instead.

However, a few months after my orders were cancelled, I met the woman who I'm now married to. :) I guess things happen for a reason. However, I was planning on loading up on lots of electronics and other goodies.

Good luck with your assignment - and promotion to TSGT! After 4 years of active duty, I served in the Air National Guard for 3 years. About 2 years into the ANG assignment, I put on TSGT. Then again, promotions in the Guard are a little easier to receive.

Congratulations!!

Is it common to get orders that far in advance?

I made E-5 in a bit under 2 years, but I guess it made a big difference that it was during Nam.
