I thought AT&T was giving out unlock codes for free. I thought both AT&T and T-Mobile came up with policies to unlock users phones.

Call them up, tell them you are going overseas and want the unlock code and they are supposedly giving them out now. There's some limitations - like I think you need to have owned the phone for more than 90 days, be a customer in good standing and have paid your latest bill.

There have been people posting on the Blackberry forum who say that AT&T has unlocked their phones when they called. I searched the AT&T website and didn't see the policy though.

I work in the Warranty service center for AT&T.. personally, I would think the only department that would unlock it would be the international department, which I have never heard of until just yesterday.

It's probably a better idea.. Although like I said, this is completely out of my department. Here's my advice: Do not call any department (at least at AT&T) on Monday or Tuesday, that's when the majority of the calls come in since we get the overflow of people who messed up their phones or have been waiting over Saturday night, Sunday, and Monday morning to call in.

The best way to get the least amount of hold time is to just call in on Thursday/Friday in the evening.. and it would not be a bad idea to call in and just ask, they should tell you exactly what needs to happen.

You guys are cosed on the weekends? Man I wish VZW would do that!

Inspector Jihad -- I just pulled this from my work here at AT&T.. Use this with extreme caution.. you can permanently lock the phone up after 5 tries:

Sony Ericsson - General

Step Action
1 Insert non-Cingular SIM card
2 Power on the handset
3 Press the left Arrow (< ) button
4 Press the star (*) button twice
5 Press the left Arrow (< ) button
- display will indicate "ME Lock"
- wait approximately 3 seconds
- the display will indicate "Network" and a picture of a closed lock
6 Press Yes
- the display will indicate "Unlock?"
7 Press Yes
- the display will indicate "Enter NCK"
8 Enter the SIM Unlock code
9 Press Yes
The handset will display "Network" and a picture of an open lock for three seconds and will then revert to the main display.
The handset is then successfully unlocked.

Note:

You only have five (5) tries to unlock the phone.
If this process is unsuccessful five times in a row, the phone will be permanently locked to the AT&T network.

It looks like you might have to purchase the unlock code from someone on ebay or one of the services off of google.. but those are the instructions for the general Sony Ericsson models.
