This has been a really sh!tty monday....sorry to gripe to everybody...

I telecommute on a full time basis (since our main office is in the midwest, and I'm in Oregon), and just got a lovely phone call from my boss...politely telling me that the company's in a bit of a crunch financially (isn't everybody?) and they've had to release some folks. And I'm fortunate enough to be on that list.

And to think I took this job because this was a financially stable company (they are, and will be around for a long time, just without me).

Granted, it's probably the best thing that could've happened to me, as I wasn't really happy there, but it just comes at a really bad time, financially.

What gets me the most is that our entire staff liked me and knew I did great work, and put in nothing but praise about me, but it was ultimately our CEO's decision (which sucks, as I don't think he's ever been fond of me). Even our CEO said that there were no complaints, but money talks (especially when you've got a business model that revolves around advertising).

So if anybody (preferbly Oregonians...I live in Bend) knows of anybody that's looking for a good web geek, with a journalism/newspaper background, with a ton of experience managing online news sites, PM me, email me, whatever :).

Send PayPal donations to EDIT: Nevermind...it was a joke, but the mod's edited it anyway, so I'll just get rid of it.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest...I'm off to the store to check the want-ads....

UPDATE (4/30): Still have yet to hear back from them as to when I'm going to get my check that's due to me from two weeks ago. According to my contract, I'm also owed 30-days pay, so they still owe me 3 paychecks (1 past due)...and I've got a house payment due tomorrow <grumble>.

After talking to some of my co-workers, they all agreed that I shouldn't have been let go, but it obviously isn't their decision. Some of my co-workers are scared as well that they might be next, and are looking into quitting if things don't change...I didn't realize how bad it was, and neither did they until the higher-ups ruined my Monday. We'll have to see where this turns out...

Regardless, I went down to one of the local employment agencies (Express Personnel), and they basically told me that nobody would hire me for the positions they had (all entry level) because I was overqualified and the employer would have to know that I would probably be looking for something else -- they don't want to hire somebody that's going to be contstantly trying to find a better job. So in other words, I'm screwed, as I'm in the fastest growing section of Oregon for a reason: EVERYBODY and their frickin' dog wants to live here (Deschutes County, the county I live in, is the 64th fastest growing county in the U.S. according to this article) . I've lived here my entire life, and I've been annoyed by the growth, but I love it here, and have a couple generations of family here, and I'm not about to give that up (especially with a baby).

Anyway, so far, no luck, but I'm back at editing the sites at my domains to see what I can do.

Thanks again for all your sympathy.

Welcome to the wonderful world of unemployment.
The good news is they extended unemployment 13 weeks. The bad news they only pay you half of what you were earning.
Now you can sit home all day and recieve hundreds of rejections a month from tech companies across the world.

If you're lucky - most won't even bother.

Yeah, I know there are a lot more jobs in the Valley, that's why I'm picking up and Oregonian, a Statesman Journal, and a Register Guard at the store...if I can't find something here, I'll be sure to look over there.

If I make it to Cornelius (which I might, considering I've got a pile of family in Forest Grove), I'll let you know.

Sorry to hear of this... even though you weren't happy there. Not many people are happy with their jobs but money is the only motivating factor and being unemployed sucks equally whether you liked your job or not. ;)

Either way, you should really do some kick-ass s#!T with orty.com and show your next potential employer what you're capable of. An online portfolio for a web geek is sometimes more important than just a resume "saying" what you've done.

Good luck to you!

Yeah, the money is always a motivating factor, as it paid decent for a first year out of college job.

But yes, I've already got plans for the various domains I own, and now that I've got a bit more time on my hands (at least, a bit more motivation), I'm going to turn them in to something kick ass :).

Wow that's awful, especially when you don't really see it coming. Best of luck to you in your job search and I hope things work out ok financially.

I second that if you find the time for it. Anything that can potentially put you ahead of the pack may help out later on.

Sorry to hear that. :(

I know its tough, I got laid off last year. Keep your head high, keep a positive outlook on things, that can be tough. Make sure you contact as many people as you can. I would highly recommend going to career fairs. They seem impersonal, which the tons of people that are there, but I got 2 interviews from going to a career fair, I hadnt gotten any interviews using other methods of trying to find a job.

hehe...unfortunately, I got rid of all my stuff that anyone would want to buy anyway...otherwise you would see me in the FS/FT forum right now.

I think looking for jobs is just as bad...if I have to fill out one more damn employment agency application, my hand's going to fall off. At least when I'm working I can type everything, which is FAR easier
