I was under the car looking for the source of an oil leak. It dripped right into the corner of my eye. :frown:

So I ran inside to look at a MSDS for engine oil.

It basically says it's non-eye irritating. No specific first aid measures are required, as a precaution remove contact lenses and flush eyes with water.

Wasn't expecting that.

/puts safety goggles on

At least I know where it's comming from now.... kinda. :D

Well, it doesn't sound like a problem now but be sure to change it every three thousand miles.

hmm...

Weird, it appears to be leaking out of where the dipstick tube goes into the engine block.

That's bizarre. It's a pretty quick leak too, I thought for sure it would be leaking out of somewhere pressurized.

Pull the tube, clean & dry it and the hole. Reinstall with silicone. Done.

The sulfur in fresh gear oil in the eye will leave a lasting burning sensation for several hours. Even after flushing with water...I know ;)

To find the source of a drip, place a clean sheet of cardboard under the area overnight. The spot will be pin pointed.

It's really difficult to get to, but that's the only thing in the area that I can see.. It's definitely not leaking from the front main seal. I suppose the oil pressure sending unit could be located in that area too..

Grumble. But it's losing about a quart every 2 weeks(600 miles - it only leaks when the engine is running).

Still seems weird to me.. I can't get a clear view of it, but that would almost mean that the dipstick tube isn't seated all the way or something.

I've fixed about three leaks where the oil pressure sending unit was leaking right out of the wire lug area, with no cracks. On my camry, it was really shooting out of there.

I was working on my Camaro's gas tank one time installing a electric fuel pump and managed to get some gasoline in my ear. Extremely painful , so much that i had to have my brother drive me to the emergency room where the doctor irrigated it for several minutes. Avoid getting gasoline in your ear.

When you are under a car wear safety glasses. You may think you look like an idiot, but you will look more like an idiot when you smack a little girl with a 6' long red/white cane.

Anyway, toss in some florescent dye, drive around the block, and check for the dye. At speed, and with an oil leal that large, oil will fly everywhere if you are at speed. The leak could be in an entirely different place, and an eddy current in the bay is flinging it somewhere else.

If it is leaking standing still, then the dipstock tube isn't to blame. The bottom of the tube is not immersed in oil in any engine I can think of. You may have a cracked galley plug that is allowing oil to leak out, and it happens to be roughly in line with the tube.

This will date me, but back in the early seventies my hair was rather long. To roll around under a car on a creeper, I had to lift my head way up to keep my hair from catching under the wheels of the creeper.

I had dropped the pan on a transmission to drain it and fluid was still dripping off the valve body into the pan. I was rolling around underneath looking at various things and lifted my head, rolled backwards and dropped my head right into the pan of ATF. Right up to my ears.

It was right at the start of my work day and I was trying to get that stuff out of my hair all day. It took quite a few days to shampoo it out to the point that it felt clean again.

I had one of my employees be the unfortunate recipient of a geyser of oil. He was emptying a rolling oil drain into a waste oil tank. You plug in shop air, and turn a valve with shuts off the opening to the top of the drain - the pressure then forces the oil through a hose into the tank. Well, he forgot to close the valve. The oil hit the ceiling, then rained down on him like a waterfall. He was pretty much covered. He said later, "I had oil in the crack of my ass". The biggest problem was cleaning it all off his body, hair, mouth, eyes etc. He was in the shower for hours I guess. The clothes went in the trash. He got some rashes in various places - sort of the same thing as acne (a build up of oils in the skin).

Don't know what pissed him off more - the oil, or the rest of us laughing our asses off at him.

Last time I changed the fuel filter on my Lightning some 91 octane dripped into my ear. I haven't felt pain like that in a long time. In fact I almost passed out. :p

Wa-aay back when I was an apprentice Operating Engineer, I got assigned to work as an "oiler". ALL lubrication for a pretty large "dirt spread". We had over 70 pieces of heavy equipment to service daily. Oil changes, greasing, etc. Kept us pretty busy for our 10 hr. day. My partner (and journeyman who was teaching me) overfilled a hydraulic system one day on a large rock truck while the bed was up. I TOLD him it was WAY overful, but he was a journeyman, and I was a low-life apprentice, so... Yep, when the bed came down, hydraulic oil went everywhere...I got a bath of about 20 gallons of warm ~150 degrees(fortunately not hot~300+ degrees) ISO32 hydraulic oil ...hair, eyes, clothes, etc., all soaked...Took quite a while to get so I didn't feel like I was a piece of chicken in the fryer.
Needless to say, HE got fired for his fvck-up, and I was the butt of many jokes for a few days...sh!t happens...

What? lol..

I haven't played with any methanol lately..

Oh, maybe you're thinking of when I got carb cleaner in my eye... lol

Yeah, I wasn't thinking.

But yeah, I'm kinda doubting it's from the dipstick tube, I mean.. that just doesen't make any sense. I can't get my head up under there to look around though...

Maybe if I took the alternator and bracket off. :frown:

Cars suck.

It leaks while sitting still, and while driving the windage blows it all over the right underside of the car. It's getting nasty, so I want to fix it.. if I could figure out where it's comming from.

I need the factory service manual, the Haynes manual I got is garbage.

I think oil in the eyes is one of the first symptoms before you turn into one of those alien things.
