I just got an ATi 9800 and BF2 froze

So I got my card today from Fabio, and I downloaded the drivers and got everything set up. I went to play BF2 demo, and I didn't know how much my card could handle, so I just set all the settings to medium. It started out a little choppy but after about 30 seconds it got better. Then after about 5 minutes, a tank shot at me and the screen froze. I opened up task manager and it said it was not responding and my CPU usage was 100%. I tried to end task, but it was taking forever so I just hit the restart button.

Now, could this have happened because I only have 512MB memory right now?

Fairly sure it's the memory.

I had to get 2GB because even 1GB would stutter. :( I have no problems at all with 2GB now.

BF2 did freeze like that when I had 1GB. Being the patient person I am, I just pressed ESC menu and waited about 5 mins. FINALLY, it unfroze itself.

Post your computer's specs... oh, and is the power plugged into the 9800?

I have 1GB of RAM, a 9500 Pro, and a 2700+ and BF2 plays ok... around 40fps @ 1280x960 everything on medium with no AA/AF. It dips to 20 when theres too many stuff blowing up on screen.

The only time it locks or kicks me to desktop is when I overclock a little, probably due to overheating since I can play maybe 20-30 minutes on it before it freezes.

I played for hours last night and for one second it did freeze for me. Then it asked me if I wanted to send an email to ATI about the problem. Whatever, I clicked on cancel and kept on playing.

I'm not an expert at that game but boy, some of those players are funny. I was run over by a tank by a guy on the same team and then a Jeep on my own team. LOL, watching these guy play is funny.

Well, I just put in my other 512MB of RAM (now I have 1 gig), and it works fine.

I do have power plugged into my card, I forgot to, but when I tried to start my computer, it wouldn't let me until I plugged it in.

Is there a way to tell how many FPS you are getting in BF2? Like in CS:S you type in cl_showfps 1. Is there something like that for BF2?

renderer.drawFps 1
Displays the current and average frames per second (FPS) in the top left corner.

type it in the console

the first number is your current fps and the second is your average fps

LOL, OK, I got it.

Hey, this is kind of cool. I got my X700 Pro on sale (and the Athlon 3400+ was on sale as well) and I put the game at 1024x768 with high details and high quality sound (can't put it on ultra high, don't know why) and I have usually over 40 fps. Hehehehe. :)
