I live near tampa and I paid for a nice big upgrade. I get 15mbps downstream 2mbps upstream on my cable. Anyway my crappy old router can't handle the overhead apparently at these speeds, it's a Netgear RP614. If I use the router I can only download at like 700kb/sec but if I connect one of my pc's directly to the cable modem I get 1500kb/sec.

What is the best router I can get right now on the market? I am probably willing to shell out up to about $200 assuming it is worth it. I don't use any wireless right now but I'm planning on getting a laptop eventually so I'd like to get a wireless router anyway even though I won't be using it for awhile. I've found one wireless router that supports gigabit lan speeds here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127158

Will that work well or are there better choices? All feedback is greatly appreciated.

I have a Netgear WGU624 and it maxes my 9-10mbps at 1.12.

It is a good router but it has a "locking problem" where the router has to be restarted from time to time.

Many people here prefer the Linksys WRT54GS. My brother has 1 and it maxes out his connetion which is the same as mine.

verizon uses the DLink..DI604: wired and DI 624 wirless for there 15/2

I have a DI604 and use a Netgear WGR 614(so the netgear is capable of these speeds but did interface with Pppoe or something so I could not hook fios direcly to it) as a wirless AP and I hit max of 14.8mbps/1797mbps

I have noticed time of day and server location can have a big impact on speed

I d/l ATI from there site and hit max speed of 1.8-2.0mg/sec

I've been tempted to try the DI-624 because its relatively cheap and that it works with FIOS however I've read that some people have issues with it dropping out often on the newegg reviews. I imagine though most of the negative newegg user reviews stem from user error (not updating the firmware). Can anyone confirm or deny? Also I know for a fact that verizon put it out it's own firmware for that router that's optimized and tailored for FIOS so I worry how d-link's latest firmware will be.

What speed test do you fellows use ? I find that different tests give different results.
Speakeasy has about 6 different regions that u can use. I get 1.5 mbps at the Seattle site
and 3 to 4 mbps at the Atlanta site. I live in Florida
Thanks

i use the ones at broadbandreports.com and also the speakeasy ones. I think my best speakeasy site is the Georgia one and I'm near tampa.

A while ago, Verizon stopped using regular modems and they are now using wireless routers with their DSL.

Why do you need another router?

Why do I need another router? Read my original post and find out how my current router limits me!

I knew that. I just thought that the router provided by Verizon would be enough.
I helped a friend with a DSL setup and Verizon sent him a wireless router with 4 wired ports. I would imagine he won't need go get a second router, or will he?

My ISP is Earthlink

no...verizon I am sure will send the DI 624

this is there wireless router for FIOS..so I would assume for DSL as well

As for speed..I have FIOS 15/2 and it really varies from server location and time of day for d/l speed from the test sites..most consistent test site is here
http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123
I generally get upload report of 1.37mps and d/l of 13.7-14.8mps

speakeasy servers speed varies all over the place..DC server was the fastest and used to report 14.3mps....today about 8mps

I figured I'd post my results. Looks like I made a good choice to go with the DI-624. Here are pics. The first one is the speed test using the old router and the second one is the speed test using the new router. See for yourself. Tremendous difference
