My old one has been flaky for a while but I always put off replacing it. This past weekend, the damn thing started smoking when I tried to play a cd. The miraculous thing was that it still worked afterwards... At least it was resilient. I had enough of the speaker clipping when I turn it up all the way, the inability to play cds, the shoddy mp3 playback, and the static over aux input. The only good thing was that it looked cool with the large visualizer.

I replaced it with a Dual unit. This thing has HD radio, bluetooth and sounds better. Paid a single bill for it. Can't wait for my next long trip.

I bought two Pioneer F700BT's when they were clearing them out for $300 and change. One in my car, one in my wife's, best aftermarket upgrade I've ever done. I don't think I'd want a car without bluetooth and in-dash GPS anymore. The ipod control is really nice for my wife, since she uses an iphone. I keep an old ipod connected to it, but for me that's no different than plugging in a flash drive or SD card (which it also supports).

Congrats, be sure to get a good security system, my $400 after-market stereo was stolen by a thief a few weeks back that managed to do $3000+ worth of damage and > 1 month worth of time in the shop to the vehicle in order to break in and steal it.

Wow, fuck that. I had some new tires put on my car back in late '06 and someone stole the rims and tires of my car...here's the kicker, they were OEM! Not only did I have to replace $1000 worth of wheels/tires, but the frame was bent because they had put the car on cinder blocks. It was somewhere around $2000 worth of damage. Our deductible is $1000, too....OUCH.

Or just stop locking your doors to minimize the damage. A security system isn't really going to stop anyone that wants to take your stuff. They'll smash the window and destroy the dash to get the stereo out, and still be gone in 10 minutes.

On many cars, the smashed window is the most expensive part of the repairs anyway.

I find that a blinking light in the car is all that it takes to deter most thieves. My car alarm barely works but the light does flash and no one touches my car. It might be due to the fact that is is a crappy car though.

I have an old Mercury, but it does have a flashing red light in the dash for the car alarm. Did not help.

I had the stereo system locked down with a security code so that it becomes a brick if disconnected from a power source and the proper code is not provided. Probably a way to bypass, although the manufacturer claims that it requires that it be sent back to the factory to unlock if the code is forgotten.

I do an inventory of my belongings that are prone to being targeted for theft, so I provided the police with the serial number, but I am sure it is long gone, but would be nice to catch the fucker.

Oddly enough, they left my Sennheiser headphones, the $100 GPS Navigation Software DVD and the $75 iPod adapter for the stereo (they actually took the time to disconnect it from the head unit and left it in the car).

As for keeping the car unlocked, would have helped reduce the damage, but I would rather them work for it. The guy had to crawl in via the hatchback to avoid the alarm, he still ripped my climate control system apart to get at my stereo and the dealer's service center cannot find a replacement molding for the climate system, great support Ford!
