...Too bad its a little broken. http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/5008/img0221lb.jpg

As far as I can tell, just the outer glass visible in the picture is broken, all the inner lenses are intact. The only other damage I can see is the metal ring that rotates the lens for zoom is slightly bent and prevents me from zooming in, I cant turn past 15mm.

What do you camera guys think, any chance this will buff right out?

Edit: on a side note, some professional photographer is having a bad night....

Ouch. That isn't even worth fixing.

Can you even get parts for a lens?

Not easily.

However, the manufacturers do offer a repair service.

An imapct this severe, will almost certainly have put the whole of the rest of the lens out of alignment. Even for a $2000 lens, the amount of effort needed to check and realign the whole thing would almost certainly not be worth it. (at least not at the hourly rates that the OEMs charge - hundreds of $ per hour).

Thats what I was assuming. At the very least I get to open it up and see what it looks like inside. Never taken apart a camera lens before.

How do you know it's worth $2000? If it's worth so much, why haven't you turned it in to a local police station's lost and found for the owner to find?

Probably from:

Also, if I think that falls under any sort of discarded property laws in the state its in. Just like someone setting out a couch on the side of the road for the trash guys.

Awww. :(

I pour one out for my lost friend.

That's, like, a lens I have always dreamed of owning. Damn, such a waste too. Looks like quite a few of the elements are busted, and while the more internal lens elements might still remain intact, they are likely scratched from the glass particles. And I can't even say the barrel remains in perfect form. Replacing that glass, alone, is expensive.

There's a reason it was sitting unattended, the owner realizes it is now just a piece of metal and glass.

it's completely missing the front element (possibly the most expensive part), and the entire metal hood. At first I thought there was no way that was a 14-24 - in that pic it looks almost nothing like mine.

Also looks like one or both of the inner aspherical elements are busted. those won't be cheap either - see lens construction diagram:

http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/lens/zoom/widezoom/af-s_zoom14-24mmf_28g/index.htm

I know a few 3rd party repair shops, but I can't imagine anyone tackling that...the only usable parts will be the motor, a few of the smaller elements, and a case part or two.

edit: reminded me of this - could have been worse, someone could have cut it in half:

Most probably thrown away by a jealous/disgusted GF. No way somebody would just treat a expensive lens that way.

They are fun to take apart. :D
Lots of goodies in there if you work with optic trains, lasers, etc.
Ditto for focusing motor and sensors.
A hobbyist/enthusiast may pay upward of $100 or so for it as it sits.
