I'm from NYC (staten island theyre building a NASCAR stadium here) so I guess its not too big here at all but afaik NASCAR is the most popular sport in america... I'm a huge baseball fan and what I get out of baseball is seeing ridiculous plays good hits, etc. what do you guys get out of seeing a car go around and around and around like 200 times?

Ridiculous passes, good hits, crashes, spirit of competition, rooting for your favorite team/player?

It's a redneck thing, you don't have to "get it," any more than a good ol' boy needs to get opera.

The only thing I don't like about NASCAR is the fact that the "stock cars" aren't stock cars anymore..

i can tell you all day long about what makes it different and you probably still wouldn't understand why people watch it. to be honest with you, it does look very boring on TV, but you should go check out a race one day, its a totally different atmosphere and is definitely not as boring. they're almost always on ovals because if they were on roadcourses, the people in the stands wouldn't be able to see the car all around the lap. i'm not going to try to convince that it's fun or anything like that, but check out a race if you can, unlike some of the people in this forum who pass judgment without knowing anything about it.

Tire strategy, drafting, teammates helping you with passes or positioning, pit strategy, bumpin...

As another poster said up above, my only real beef with NASCAR is that the cars aren't "stock" cars.

I'm from NYC too (live in Gramercy Manhattan) but I jus LOOOOVE NASCAR! I can't explain it but it's deep in my heart. When I watch them stock cars goin round n round, I can't imagine the rush going and intensity going through the minds of the drivers as every inch has to be taken into consideration. That and the insane G-forces they'd be feeling as they hit turns at 200+mph. INSANE!!!!!!!

edit: I can't stand football, baseball or basketball. ALL BORING as hell.

The drivers are real athletes and role models. You never hear of them doing drugs or killing someone. Its not a redneck only sport. The drivers have to be in great physical shape to drive the cars. You have no idea how much it takes out of a person. The drivers don't make the $$ like other professional athletes who make way more than they need to be making, they make realistic amounts.

i feel the same way, except i also dont find baseball interesting.

In the right atmosphere it can be fun. Like in the minor league stadiums where they have hot tub seating sections. Or watching the Giants play in San Francisco where you can get wine wine and real food rather than flat beer and six week old pretzels.

It just happened to be the first thing in the memory bank at the time :p It's just about as important with any form of motorsports...

Play a NASCAR game on the PC (not a console, the PC!) with full realism enabled and you'll begin to understand.

I'm not a fan at all - never fully watched a NASCAR race - but there's a helluva lot involved with the sport.

 yeah you should... and since it would be an inaugural race I'd imagine it would be pretty grand... especially in NYC. if you end up don't liking it, well i can't help you with that. :p i like cars in general so that logically led me into watching all kinds of motorsports... which if you think about... is just going around in loops as well but people here only bash NASCAR.

Not necessarily. That is true with F1, etc... where people like Ferrari have more than an equal share of wins because of their deep pocketbooks. With NASCAR, there is a level of regulation to make the cars so equal, that it really comes down to individual drivers and teams to make small tweaks and strategy as conditions change. For example, a track will "drive" differently after half a race or so, as more rubber gets deposited on the track, or as temperature changes. The driver has to be able to feel this difference, and relate to the crew chief, who must then decide what to change about the car. Often very subtle changes, such as a 1psi pressure change in tires on one side of the car, or another strip of tape added to the front grille. There is much more to the sport that initially meets the eye. Truly facinating.
