aplay is much the same, only it plays instead of recording. For supported soundfile formats, the sampling rate, bit depth, and so forth can be automatically determined from the soundfile header.
Once upon a time, I played with something similar, /dev/snd. I'd write data there and hear it. It also worked to record sound by reading data from it.
One day I didn't hear any sound. Turned out I'd written to /dev/sda instead! I did manage to recover the drive; fortunately only the partition table and a recovery partition were overwritten.
