..network user accounts for pre-schoolers. This includes e-mail accounts, too. For some reason I find this odd, wrong..and useless..but who knows. I'm not a teacher.

I agree there...but I don't think pre-schoolers and kindergartners should be given access to all these resources at such an early age. Anyhow...most of the students know much more about computers than the teachers do...

Sort of. We just implemented an anti-spam/virus agent on our email servers. People still get spammed out the arse though, but mostly teachers, not students. Students don't use their school email accounts to register on silly websites. Actually, the students don't use their email accounts at all. They use their ISP's email, yahoo, hotmail..etc.

Teachers arent the smartest brand of people, unfortunately..so students dont get monitored that closely. We have content filtering (required by the CIPA)..but it gets very political around here about what gets blocked and what does not, and there is no policy about what should get blocked and what does not. We may block a site, and then a second later we get a bunch of angry librarians calling us telling us to unblock it.

Besides, these are children. They have no "rights" under the constitution. And the only protections for the children are the laws about welfare and labor.

Pre-schoolers do not need and should not have access to e-mail. This is upsetting me. I know times were different but development of our children's minds hasn't changed that much since I was young. Children of that age need to be working with their hands, building spatial relationships, coordination, INTERACTION WITH OTHER HUMANS! We are seriously moving to a secluded society where we will never see anyone except online. I find this a waste of resources and of no benefit to the children who will be attending the pre-school. The "teachers" should rethink this decision.

I would if I could. Our IT Dept (around 30 people) has no say in it..actually we have very little say in anything we do. We have a couple of old guys (were talking before WANG here, folks) who run things, have no idea how any of this stuff works. They make misinformed decisions. They are controlled by the administration, and they are total "yes" men. Its frustrating..but its job security.

I agree. Although, the teachers generally do not teach them how to use the email until later in their education, it is available to them. For the most part, the teachers just park the kids on the computers so they can play games.

Computers in schools for kids younger than 12 is a complete waste of effort and money. God forbid they would actually spend time teaching the basics.

It's painfully obvious to me that since the widespread adoption of computers in schools the ability to read, write, and spell has done nothing but deteriorate.

There is actually a charter school here that we provide IT services to. When the network goes down for a bit..or if there are any problems, they send the kids home. Messed up.
