How so? At least he admitted he made a mistake and isn't trying to find a way to scam the insurance company.

Because he doesnt know his policy thats why. I damned well know my policy. I couldnt list the exact amounts for everything right off, but i DAMNED well know who can and cant drive my car!
In my case my policy covers the car. Period. I could loan it to a non licensed illegal immigrant and he could wrap it around a tree and I'll still get a check.

He's not asking about his policy.

If he knew his own policy, and his friend knew his policy, they wouldnt be in theis situation would they?

if he has basic collision, then his own car isnt covered for damages anyways. collision coverage is to pay off the other car's damage when you hit someone else. comprehensive coverage pays for your own damages. I think....

Now do you understand the importance of having a basic understanding of your policy? Like I said, you dont need to know every minute detail, but at LEAST knowing who is covered and under what circumstances is VERY important!
For example, lets say your in college (And you may be, I dont know, but lets pretend...) and your roommate wants to borrow your car to run down and grab a case of beer for a party your all going to tonight.
Is he covered? Important stuff to know! If he is, then sure no problem. If hes not you can tell him that your insurance doesnt cover him and you'll go, or you'll give him a ride.
But if you dont know you'll probably just think Oh I have insurance and not think twice about it and let him go.....Which could be a costly mistake

so am i right? or am i wrong?

It would seem to me like his policy might cover it, but I wonder if they could sue YOU for the damages?

This would almost make sense, sort of.

With my old insurance company I would get constant notes from them telling me "for the love of god, don't let anyone else drive your 300 (400) horsepower sportscar."

Nothing like that with my new company, but had the situation ever arisen, I would have been happy to take my ins co to court and ask them why they were encouraging me to drive drunk if I had a sober passenger who could have driven me home instead.

In fact I believe it's the other way around, although the definition of the words wouldn't indicate that 🙂

If the guy was cheap, or had a cheap car, he probably has only comprehensive (which is in fact liability plus some basics like fire and theft). If a person is not cheap, or their car is worth a lot, they generally have collision, which is comprehensive plus the ability to have their damages covered in the case of their being at fault.

ah i think skoorb is right. i had it switched around. but the idea's the same. basic coverage doesnt cover one's own car for damages

Collision: Coverage that insures against damage to your vehicle as a result of hitting another vehicle or object (i.e. a tree).

Comprehensive : Coverage that insures against damage to your vehicle as a result of a loss caused by something other than collision. Some examples are theft, fire, vandalism or falling objects. This coverage is sometimes referred to as "Other-than-Collision".

Liability: Coverage that insures against damages (to other party) for bodily injury or property damage when you are legally responsible for an auto accident.

Er. . . Tell your friend that badgers stole the car and drove it off of a cliff or, better yet, blame it one someone you really hate.......

No, seriously, own up to your mistake.

Pay for it yourself, if you don't have insurance, pay for it out of pocket. Don't expect your friend to cover your ass. They trusted you to drive well, and making decisions about the state of your alertness is part of drivng.

If you're going to borrow something you take the responsability of returning it in better condition that you borrowed it. Not break it then try to come up with some dumb ass excuse.

No, seriously, own up to your mistake.

Or... If you really want MY advise. I would just kill said friend.

Since he was in the vehicle and gave you direct permission to operate his vehicle, I believe he and his insurance is most likely responsible for any damages. At least that's what I seem to recall, but laws may vary on that state to state. What his insurance actually covers is another issue.

I am glad you are both alive.

Buy your friend another car.

Insurance follows the vehicle.
His car, his insurance covers the accident.
You should offer to pay his deductible being as it was your fault. It's the least you can do.

Liability is the bare minimum and covers damages to objects you hit.
Collision covers your own car, and since he doesn't have that, it doesn't matter who was driving. He ain't getting a check from his ins. co.

1. Your friend calls his insurance company.
2. They tell him "Ok, we are gonna fvck your friend's insurance up the ass."
3. His insurance calls your insurance company "Your driver fvcked up our car, pay us back."
4. I don't know what happens after that...
