the remnants of metricom are expanding on a limited basis.

sprint BBD [fixed wireless, not satellite] woulda been a good option, [faster/better than cable&dsl] but for some reason sprint is dumb and cut costs and that division was one of the first to go, despite selling out here in broadband starved silicon valley

also, checkout www.dslreports.com

i still have a brand new idsl modem sealed in retail box from the northpoint bankruptcy; the SBC guy was supposed to show up and never did [but the northpoint guy did]. and now u know how and why northpoint, covad, rythms all had to file banrkuptcy, u cant beat a monopoly

speaking of monopolies: http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/archive/images/dilbert2914310020826.gif

Oh man that SUCKS. A few years ago it was literally the first item on the agenda but more recently I've forgotten because as time goes on I just assume that anywhere worth living will have it. You probably assumed that as well and unfortunately it's not the case yet. :(

yep, i assumed. I stayed in the same town, same area code, but now i'm 15,400 feet from the teleco... damn. I missed ADSL by 400ft.

EDIT: BTW, does anyone have a good suggestion for CHEAP dialup?

I hear ya bud. I just built a house at the end of this road that has Adelphia cable service that goes part way down the road. Honestly cable tv/net service was the last thing I was thinking about when buying the land and building my house. So I called adelphia about running a line out to the house. For a mere $21K the lady said, sure, no problem. When do you want it? Uhh...no thanks.

How close is that neighbor that has cable down the road? Maybe Make friends and setup a wireless link to their house and share an (ISP Approved*) broadband connection. You could spring for the wireless equipment and antennaes and maybe a majority of the broadband connection. If you have line of site to their house, even if it's a somewhat long distance away, Figure about $200-500 for equipment using home-built (c)antennaes.

*Some ISP's allow this, some don't. I'm not suggesting you do something wrong. Got that. ;)

You FOOL!

I told my wife that the ONLY things I cared about when we bought our house were

1. High-speed internet
2. Room for the computers

:D

You might wanna try to call the cable company because the on-line program to see if you can get internet was wrong for me.

And why not also call the phone company.

i already called the phone company, and since cable was not available in my old place, i'm assuming that their internet check is correct.

I got shafted by adelphia and their accounting scandel. We moved outta my old neighborhood where I had powerlink service, and into an Apartment that had adelphia (was a rqmt) so I could continue my service while my home was being built, literally, a few hundread feet away. (We could watch it going up from our 2nd floor apt window).

The neighborhood our home was being built in was once a comcast area that adelphia had swapped (just before we went to contract) to get the subscribers. I was in the apartment for 7mo's after the switchover but no broadband service. My friend lives about a block away (same 'hood) and we'd check his house to see if they had provided service but NO.

So, we closed and moved in, but I'm back on dialup. Been moved in for nearly 10mo's now and still no broadband service. It was looking like we'd have had it for this summer based on all estimates but then the whole accounting scandel struck and upgrades got put on hold. Rumor has it (from the local support techs) they are starting up again, so, we might see broadband in the next year, but, I'm not holding my breath.

One thing that was sort of nice, when we first moved in I had adelphias dial-up ISP free for about 7mo's. They knew about it too. They were cancelling the service but because I had an ID already I could use it they just didn't have a way to bill it. Stupid, but, I wasn't complaining.

Then, one day, no more dialup. They ended the service w/o any sched warning to me--but-- can't complain as it *was* free. So, had to go get another ISP. Meanwhile, my email address is still on hold (per my request) at adelphia, I can receive but I (and others) can't send through their server(s) from outside of thier IP range.

Oh, and bellsouth/dsl--that's a good one-- they roll out all new neighborhoods w/ the latest fiber technology then they (Basically) decide it's too expensive to install the adapter cards so you can get DSL Service. Wonderful.
