I just said my problem was a "Personal Reason" (I hate eBay's business practices) and put "Other" on the next page. Then I put "No, close my account" on the third page. That seems to have done it, pending a 60-day waiting period.

This isn't really to do with the company, but eBay as a whole:
Price gouging is ridiculous
Auction sniping is annoying
Fake and shill bidding is rampant
Lots of false advertising/fakes

List goes on and on...

IMO, the fees are perfectly reasonable. You're paying for the convenience of selling something online, to a massive market, and (almost) having a guarantee that you'll get rid of it in x amount of days. If none of that is important to you, than sure, the fees are excessive.

Actually the high shipping charges are indirectly one of the BEST things about Ebay, that means the buyer figured out a way to avoid paying Ebay their full commission since the shipping charge doesn't figure into the commission.

And in regards to fraud, just for the fun of it, I did some research on these PS3's that have been selling for over $2000. If you actually look at the bids, virtually ALL the bids are by buyers who have a rating under 10, which pretty much mean the bids are phony, and the sellers are going to have to sit on the PS3 for two weeks before Ebay officially cancels the sale so that you can resell it, and if the same thing happens again, you don't have much of a shot selling it before Christmas. And there's NO recourse since Ebay does such a lousy job of verifying users, and an even lousier job of communicating with sellers to resolve fraud.

I've never understood the attraction of Ebay. It seems like there is such rampant scamming and fraud, plus with the time you spend bidding and emailing back and forth...I mean, what's your time worth?

How often do you see a "omgz i got the best deeeel on Ebai you guise!!!!" posts in ATOT relative to the ones that say "oh noes i got scammed what do i doooo????" Ya a lot more of the latter.

eBay is golden when it is taken for what it is--an online flea market. Just like the local swap meet, you can find relatively great crap on eBay, mostly on the "one man's trash/another man's treasure" basis. Stuff like books (waaaaaay below Amazon for like-new titles), collectibles, very random/proprietary tech parts, and vintage stuff. You should *NOT* use eBay to find the following: brand-new electronics, the latest Madden, jewelry, very expensive collectibles where authenticity can't be verified, plain IDE disks that the seller is mysteriously "unable to test and selling as-is", etc, etc.

Regarding sniping--dont get me started. If people were honest with themselves about what ABSOLUTE MAX PRICE they are willing to pay when they placed their damn proxy bid, they would never be sniped, period. They'd be happy to give the item to the fool who bid last minute and paid too much.
