Nice post! Sounds like you had a great time! You were lucky on how nice the weather was when you were here...

I watched it erupt in '80, and now your post has got me motivated to do the hike when some nice weather rolls back around. Tried to do it once with my ex girlfriend, but it was socked in and raining, so we passed on the chance.

Really good job! way to stick with it and make it to the top! Great photos!

Great pics, especially the sunset ones! What were the stats on your climb as far as distance and elevation gain?

I did Longs Peak in Colorado a couple months ago. 7.5 mile climb from the trailhead to the summit, 4700ft vertical gain. Summit is 14,250ft. I did that one in 8 hours round trip, trail time (not counting the 2.5 hours I chilled at the top... got a nasty sunburn, I think I was the only person there without sunscreen). Great climb, I highly recommend it to anyone in the Estes Park area. I've got pics here: http://pacmanfan.net/gallery/folder/Sawtooths_Tetons_Rockies_2006
The pictures starting at IMG_1075.jpg are from that climb, and pan4.jpg to pan9.jpg are from it also.

I'm trying to find a more challenging target to climb next time I go out west, but Helens intrigues me... I just might have to try it :)

Nice pics.

I think Mount St. Helens was 4000 something feet elevation gain. It was difficult because the ash gave way under your feet at the top of the mountain, making it like trying to climb sand.

But your mountain was higher in elevation and must have been a lot harder to breathe. I'm too heavy I think. I'll be ok if I lose some weight.

Yeah, I'm a little guy... 5'10" 135lbs. Plus, I was acclimated to hitting 9500ft passes with a 50lb backpack, I'd been doing that for the whole week before. I was in great shape, and Longs Peak was a piece of cake. I didn't start hurting for air until I hit 13kft. Now that I've been back below 1k for 6 weeks now, I would have a really hard time doing Longs. Next year I'd like to go back out and backpack for a week to get in shape, and then try and summit a 14'er every day for a week. :D

Ever thought about climbing Mt. McKinley? Lately I've started thinking harder about it... Maybe make it a goal to summit it in the next 5 years or something. That would be the climb of a lifetime, since I'm not cut out for Everest :Q

Nice pics. What gear did you use?

I've done quite a bit of climbing over the years, kind of miss the scenery.

I don't have any special gear, it was just me, a pair of jeans, a t-shirt (with a coat just in case) a pair of sneakers, a school-type backpack, a LED mini-maglite flashlight, and my Canon A80.

All I?ve got to say is if you remotely want to do something like this don?t put it off. Life is too short not to take advantage of a memorable adventure like this. Great job.
