Actually they send quite a bit. They'll never send an e-mail requesting you to update your information or asking for username/password, though.

Brian,
We are required to file a year end evaluation report. There is a set format. We have a consultant who is drafting the report and he needs the information detailed below to comply with the feds format. Can you please help us attain this info?

It is a total of 15 numbers - 5 annual totals (one for each year, 2000-2004) for each of the following:
1.) Total number of licensed drivers in RI; and
2.) Total number of licensed drivers in RI who were 15-20 years of age; and
3.) Total number of licensed drivers in RI who were 65 or more years of age.
Thank you for your assistance.

Janis

Again, you should be a detective.

You really think the junk mail people are honest businesspeople? They sell the lists to the phishers. They're all scum and in it together. Some of the junk mailers are perhaps phishers too.

how are they supposed to sell a list that has my e mail on it, if i haven't given it to anyone to begin with?

or do they just send e mails out to anything that could be an e mail address?

Actually, PayPal sent me a legit email the other day asking me to update my info. I had recently changed my eBay user ID, and PayPal asked me to update my account with them.

I logged into Paypal (and physically typed the URL in myself), and found that it was legit.

What gets me is that Paypal included a link in their email to Paypal's website. Isn't this how the scammers fool the naive?
