We have ants in our living room so I went outside with a big bottle of some Hot Shot Insect Control Clear Formula. The sprayer on there was messed up so I unscrewed the top and just poured some where I thought the ants might be coming in. In doing so I got a little on my hands.

When putting the bottle up I look on the back and it said WARNING: Harmful if absorbed through the skin! If some comes into contact wash hands for 15 minutes and call poison control!

I washed my hands really good then picked up the phone and call poison control's 1-800 number. The lady that answered was extremely nice and helpful and told me that whatever the name she used for the active ingredient in there was poisonous to insects but not really poisonous to mammals. She said that I would need to have chugged the whole bottle to impress her, but even then it wouldn't have been something to go to the hospital over.

All in all a pretty interesting 15 minutes. Guess I kinda panicked when I saw the label on the back but I feel reassured after calling her so whatever.

edit: pyrethoid is the word she used

The labels are designed to instill fear. You should see an msds for basic products. Contain all sorts of weird health warnings

You called poison control because you got some bug spray on your hands? ... That's weak, even for ATOT.

I called one night last year. Was right about this time actually, start of summer on a Sunday night.

Was spraying for bugs, putting down some stuff my dad told me about.

I was transferring it from a large bottle down to a sprayer. The big jug slipped and hit the floor with some force. I was already leaning down and the stuff dooshed out the top and into my eyes, nose and mouth.

Washed everything out and called the poison control number. Lady was super nice, must handle phone sex lines as well...

She said although I'd washed everything off, to go ahead and take a shower and just sit in there for 10-15 minutes with my eyes and mouth open, facing the shower head. She called back about an hour later to make sure everything was fine.

Top notch service :)

No you don't need an MSDS for consumable products. That would just start something stupid in America. I can just see myself walking out of the grocery store with a bag of cleaning products and a book full of MSDS's for each one.

You will find that if you asked for the msds they would have them available, i think they have too.

The guy that delievered the chemicals to the store would have a copy of the msds, for items such as ammonia etc, not so much for tomato soup.

Hell I didn't know how poisonous it was/wasn't. I just saw the warning label saying it can be absorbed through the skin and harm would come to me! :Q

Phone call for peace of mind. I'm not embarrassed.

My only experience with poison control was when my wife called for something our son did when he was 3-4...

I'd been traveling a lot and had collected a large number of the mini-toothpaste tubes, so we were using them instead of buying a full sized new one.

One night my wife walks in to check on him brushing his teeth (he typically just made a mess and never brushed his teeth if we didn't watch..lol) only to find he'd used the tube of Clearasil instead of toothpaste.

She called me in a panic (I was on the road) so I told her to call poison control... apparently they got a good laugh out of it and said he'd be fine.

lol

we have to maintain MSDS books in all our trucks, whether that product is normally kept in the truck or not. a lot of our controlled chems are in our 508 shop only, but still have to be reported in every truck. 2" 3ring binders packed full. PITA to update every 6 months.

You need to go cook red meat over an open flame, watch some football, and stare at some (female)cheerleaders, stat.

Yuppers it sucks. I work in a supply warehouse and we stock cleaning products and assorted hazmat items. MSDS binder is huge.

I can understand, to a point. But let's be honest here; anything that is sold at a Walmart that comes in a spray bottle is most likely not a threat under normal circumstances.
