I just built a computer for someone, and XP says there are no updates available, HELP!!

BD231

Lifer
I just built a simple system with these specs:

1ghz PIII Celeron at 1333mhz
512mb crucial PC133
Abit ST6
Antec True Power 330
Maxtor 740dx quiet drive
Lite-On 40x drive
GF3 Ti200
SB Audigy

Every time I do windows update, the update site says there are no updates! I also cant install the INF drivers that the ST6 came with (I'm thinking XP should have them all but I could be wrong). Dose anyone know what's going on?

XP does have an automatic update function. Maybe they were all installed for you. If it says that there are no updates available, believe it. 🙂

Go to Start -> Run, type cmd then OK. Then at the DOS prompt, type systeminfo and it should give you all the computer info. Near the bottom, just above the network card information, there should be a long list of Hot Fixes and updates. If those are there, then, as Windows Update said, there are no updates available as they've already been installed.

Confused

If there were any updates I'd see them in the add-remove programs folder as hot fix items, but their not there.

Serious question, is the XP install legit? They where going to be making some SP1 related changes that would disallow access to WU, wondering if you might be caught while part of that is rolling out?

Bill

It's a legit pro version, I think the problem was in the install. I have a cable connection so XP detects my internet settings automatically, but when I do the install on this computer, windows says it cant configure network settings. This really sucks 🙁

Try installing a cheap 56k modem, see if you can connect and download updates with that,if so then you probably have a problem with your cable setup.

Cable line is fine, just did an update with 2 other computers. Still have NO CLUE what is going on, I tried installing the "optional components" off the XP cd which did nothing.

I really think windows update is having some issues recently...

I built a Win2K box the other day, and I got the same thing, "No updates available". I reformatted/reinstalled and still got the same thing. Then, after doing that again, I was finally able to get updates. It just seems to me that Windows Update has been flaky recently, and I don't necessarily trust it anymore...

Try something for me, clear your browser cache (including 'all offline content') and see if that helps...
Bill

I had that same problem a few computers ago and the only thing that ever fixed it was a re-install. The update site would never show that it was checking for updates, you should usually see 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and mine would just sit there and not do anything. I tried and tried to fix it, but had to re-install.

I had a similar problem recently re-installing a Win98se system for someone. I neglected to disconnect the network card from the cablemodem, and it automatically contacted Windows Update behind my back. (Baaaad Windows, Bad!) It tried to install some IE updates, and some of them failed. I had to spend several hours figuring out why the system was messed up, and I finally had to manually back-rev those components back to IE5.0 levels off of the original CD. I can't believe that MS would let Windows Update fsck up a system so badly like that. I learned my lesson well - never install an MS OS while online. I'm sure it "phoned home" with some other info too, not too happy about that either.

Hmmmm, I'll give the old disconnection a try.

I had that happen the other day. "No updates available" Did a format/reinstall and was able to update after that.

I am gonna favor this one, since nothing inportant can be on there yet... ?

just format and install again, most likely you will have your updates..

check this out, from canadianpsycho in his thread...

Just found the solution....

Checked another thread (I kinda didn't read up before posting, heh ) Looks like de-selecting "Automatically Detect Settings" in the LAN settings under connections in the IE Tools fixed the problem.
