Damn I knew their drivers were crap.......but this takes the cake!

I bought an ATI-TV Wonder so I could hook my digital tv/PS2. Yeah I know the drivers from ATI and their rep, but I didn't think that so much could go so wrong with a simple pci card...............

Now, before I installed this pos card my system(Win2k) was rock stable, never crashed before, and I left it on for weeks on end with no problems. So, as usual, popped the card into a spare pci slot and I booted into windows awaiting the usual new hardware dialogs. I inserted the cd.......hmmm, no auto installation steps for win2k, I manually checked the setup file. Sure enough, Win9x only! So, I trapse to the ATI support (or lack thereof) website and download some Win2k divers.

The files were extracted and I continued with the h/w installation as per what the instructions say, first part installs right, then *poof* pc resets itself! During bootup I got the usual scandisk error for not sutting down right, thank god it was ok........surely must have been a freak event........

I got back into windows, sure enough the new h/w diaglogs were back. Again, I pointed them to the right inf files, and again the pc rebooted itself when it was copying the driver files over.......like wtf!

This time on scandisk I get tons of file errors, mainly from sys32. Eventually I got back into windows, I double checked the event logs, conflicts, for which all seemed ok. I decided to safely shut down windows, and try the card in another position, same problem. Now, by now I had spent a good hour or two on this and was beggining to get midly ticked off. I'd had enough of pi$$ing about by now, so I just decided to take out the card and get back to normal, or so I thought!

The next time I was booting up (after the last reset of the machine) tons more errors on scandisk, even a BSOD pre-windows, I get into windows the following time via last good profile to find that my soundcard, modem needed re-installing, which I did. The sound works fine again, but my modem doesn't. I'm currently on my other of my dual boot (xp) and the modem works fine!

God I'm pi$$ed off with ATI for this p.o.s. Not only did it take my system down (and almost ruin my hd's and other devices) it made my system go unstable on win2k for the 1st time. 1st Time and LAST TIME for ATI for me!

Well, I suppose the good thing is that my devices still work, and I have a good excuse to take my format/re-install a few months sooner........must get back to a clean install!

I thought it was impossible to make W2K crash..... I had been thinking about using ATI for a good 2d display card, but this will sum up my opinion......

The video cards are not like the tv tuner cards. I wouldn't let someone's single opinion ruin your decision making.

Anyways

Any OS will crash from poor drivers or defective hardware.

I have an ATI TV-Wonder. The new WDM drivers available on ATI's web site work great (even though it took them more than a year to come out with them since I bought the card). Consider yourself lucky, you don't have to wait a year.

I had the same thing happen with winXP which I installed last night, and the Santa Cruz drivers, although it was far more severe (3-4 reboots to get back into windows). I managed to get them in, but I didn't do it the normal way.
