I just bought a house and I'm getting bombarded with these mortgage protection mails...

So are these things legit or what? They make it look like it's from my mortgage company but it's really just another company.

It seems to me that anything with the word "protection" in the name is just a dressed-up way of saying "extortion".

I get them too. Yes they are legit, but you have to read the fine print. Most cover only very specific circumstances. To cover everything you need 4 or five plans and a lot of money. So they really aren't worth it.

you will continue to get hammered with those and others for as long as you have a mortgage

Yep. Just ignore them. You'll get hit on a regular basis for home equity loans and refinance offers too.

I get them too - probably average about 5 a week. (although sometimes it's 2 or 3 in a day)

PS: Note for the geeks - this is paper based spam

Some of them are probably thanks to my mortgage company, who made it difficult (used to be easy) to opt-out of their "why yes please share my info with your affiliates" program. But I'm guessing most are thanks to public records..?

use the return envelop to send back everything they send you except for any articles with your name, address, info, etc. on. ;)

Along with the rest of your junk mail, since they're footing the postage.

I doubt your mortgage company is involved. It's because your home ownership is public record. These companies buy lists from title companies filtered to certain perameters.

Throw them away. They're just expensive credit disability and life insurance offers. If you need that type of insurance, contact your agent.
