I bought a new Antec p182 case and I had finished putting everthing in and got everything hooked up (i hooked up everything that need it power also...video card, hard drive etc.) Then I plugged the power supply up and turned it on. All of a sudden I hear this very high pitched noise and a smell coming from my computer. I went to try and turn the PC on and nothing happened. So I went and I grabbed another PSU from another case I had laying around. It was an old power supply and it didnt have the correct pci express type motherboard power hook up but I figured it would still work. I only put power to the motherboard and cpu. I plugged up the power supply and turned on the PC and it turned on. My question is what could have caused my power supply to just die out like that? How could I have shorted something out?

Well, it be wise to state all the components you hooked up. It also be nice to state the PSU you used. Not sure if, and if so, what PSU comes with the p182. It could have been a bad PSU from the get go, it could be that you tried to draw way to much power from it. It shouldn't die like that though. Ask with all the above information on the PSU forum and you'll find out soon enough.

They will also give you some suggestions on what PSU to buy next. Something like a corsair 450/520hx, enhance, antec earthwatts 500 for 50$ at fry's or something similar.

I had an Antec NeoPower 480W. The case didn't come with that PSU. I already had that PSU in my old case. I just swapped. I hooked up an 8800gts a 4400X2 , DVD burner, floppy, HDD, 3 case fans + CPU fan. The thing is currently I am using a 450w supply that doesn't even have the new 24pin connector and its still working.

You really need to state what the PSU was so that we know what to tell you. Maybe you overloaded the psu or you just got stuck with a bad PSU from the start.

Properly designed Power Supplies shouldn't go up in smoke if overloaded. They just shut down. Maybe it was just time for the Antec Neopower to go?

I had that same power supply,

Always had lots of problems with it until it died and took my 7800 GT with it.

I opened it up and several of the capacitors had spilled their Guts. Mine did last several months, but it always had problems.

Also I've read on forums that many other people had problems with the same PSU.
