I just added up most of my computer receipts...

Going through paperwork, decided to add up all the computer-related receipts I have. I've kept them in a folder in the desk, about 11 years' worth now. I know I have a lot more that I just had in piles elsewhere and haven't dropped into the folder, so this isn't a real total, but the total of what's in that folder is US$21,033.37.

I am sure some others have spent even more than that, but this was just one person, running one new computer every few years with occasional upgrades.

Some highlights:

1995 - 486DX2-66 with 16MB RAM and 14-inch CRT - $1,525.
1995 - 28.8K ISA modem from Wal-mart (name brand like Zoom I think) - $210
1996 - custom system, Cyrix P-166+, 32MB, Matrox Millennium 2MB, 1.6GB drive - $1,606
1997 - retail Plextor SCSI 12X CDROM with Adaptec card - $519
2000ish - Yamaha 6x4x24 CDRW drive - $239

[Edit] Added in a few more receipts.

Im sure if I added up all my receipts and invoices for supplements this year, I probably spent over $600.

And if I added up all the receipts for the trips to the hookah bar, it would be a few hundred.

Now add in software and any possible gaming mags and stuff :/
And consumables like CD's and DVD's (writeable/RW) and the cost of an internet connection.

Then weep.

I learned that the hard way when I built my first few computers. $500 video card? Ring it up, I GOTTA HAVE THE BEST!

Now when I build new systems for myself, I look 1-2 generations behind and build a box for just a few hundred.

over a 11 year span, that's only 1883.4927272727272727272727272727.......................average per year

what are you complaining about? You work in McDonalds or something? That figure isn't that far fetched......

danny~!

Damn, according to these people he isn't spending too much money on an annual basis, well shiet, I guess I'm doing exceptionally well! Hmm, maybe I should add up my reciepts and see how much I spend annually! 😀

You paid $239 for a CD burner in 2002?!?!?

Yeah that would be stupid. I bought a Plextor 12/10/32 for $215 in 2001.

I also got a Plextor 40/12/40 for $183 in 2002.

I guessed on the date. The receipt doesn't have the year. But it has the check number, and I no longer even have the checkbook that that was written on, so it was actually probably in 2000.

I did pay $519 for a 12X CDROM in 1997 though. 🙂 Of course it was a Plextor SCSI retail kit with an Adaptec card included.

I found another $315 worth of receipts too.

I included a few pieces of software in the list, the stuff that happened to be ordered along with other things so that I still had the receipts for it or that I printed out registration receipts for from online purchase. Most software I buy alone and toss the receipt eventually.

For the first few years I was making about that level in earnings. Then for about 2.5 years I was making 40 to 50k a year. Then I was on unemployment for a year and a half, then making 36k with overtime, now I'm back up near 50k. I'm just REALLY bad with money, but it certainly doesn't help that I've spent about 2/3 of a year's worth of take-home pay on computer parts that are now almost completely worthless (yet still take up space and effort to move because I can't bear to part with any of it).

I tend to only buy components worth $100 or less. Except when it comes to processors or monitors, then I'll break the $100 barrier. I'm cheap like that.

that's still outrageous. In 1997 ( i remember, my first year in college) i spent only $300 for an external SCSI CD Burner with an Adaptec card and a SCSI enclosure. why the hell a simple CDROM would be 519 is beyond my comprehension.

I've been browsing my order history in Newegg. It goes back far... and I can tell whenever I build a new computer as there is a huge order.

I've spent about 1k in the last 2 years on computer stuff. That's not counting software, just the websites I could look up my order history on. Considering that your income's higher than mine I'd say that you're not enirely crazy.

I've only spent like $15k over 15 years or so. Most expensive components are 19" Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT at over $1,300 and a P2-400MHz at $1,200 when they were both 1st released. Will be building my 4th computer when Conroe launches in a couple of months.
