I just acquired a dog! What to do from here?

It's a teacup pomeranian... given to me from a friend who can't have him anymore.

I dont' know it's health history... it's about a year old... just a bit older, 2-3 months older maybe..

I'm about to take to a groomer today...

It seems awfully happy! But I'm wondering about it's health concerns... I want it to live a long and prosperous life with me 🙂 Any idea if there's like pet insurance or some sort of checkup I can take it to?

How much do Vets cost?? I'm a college student taking care of this dog on my own, so I'm not the richest guy around obviously =T

i think that depends where you live. The shots and initial checkup totaled to about $40 for my kitty. They spayed and declawed her for I think $60.

jt

i just got my dog its shots (waaay back in the day) and fed her, gave her water, and took her out to walk a lot... i miss having my dog 🙁

Congratulations! A dog is a beautiful thing (Sorry slikmunks...)..

Look for dog owners groups in your area and try to get rocommendations on a good vet.. They all mean well, but some are worse than others.. If you don't know the history of the dog, you can ask them to run blood pannel during the checkup to make sure everythiing is hunky dory..

Oooh how much will the blood panel cost me?

I am mainly interested in knowing it's past and if it's currently healthy 🙂

Feed it, water it, take it out to poop and pee, pet it, play with it. Not much to it...

Also give it the occasional rawhide chew toy and maybe a plush toy. If possible, allow it to meet other dogs and other people, so it doesn't turn psychotic like my neighbor's dog, and give it the opportunity to run around off-leash every once in a while.

Heh.. I love the way the thread title is worded: "I just acquired a dog.." Sounds like Seven of Nine from Voyager.. "It appears to serve no useful function.." 😛

Little dogs are great in that they can run around inside the house for exercise. You can't do that with a 40+ lb dog because you'll have no carpet left after a couple months. haha

You reminded me of a good point: DON'T FEED IT SOFT DOG FOOD. It's ok to feed it soft dog food on occasion, as a treat, but if soft dog food is the staple of your dog's diet, it won't have its teeth for long. I HATE it when I see dogs that are only five or six years old and its teeth are literally rotting out of its head. Stupid people.

Feed it nice crunchy kibbles to keep the jaw bone hardened and its teeth clean. You also need to have its teeth cleaned by a vet every other year or so.

With a Pommy, you need to brush it at least once every couple weeks, if not once a week. Also, trim its nails a few times per year. I've seen dogs with nails growing 360 degrees around and back into the pad of its foot. Again, stupid people.

Pom's are very intelligent, very social dogs, they crave your company (I almost got one of these myself, after watching one that served as a visiting dog at a hospital I worked at.He used to come in twice a week to visit the elderly people in the transitional care unit.He loved atttention and was the most well behaved, happy little dog, sweet little face too, looked like a tiny fox🙂

A while ago, we got a Red Pom (with the lovely name of Sissy)....but she's the greatest little doggie. She brings out the kid in me. And gets so lazy sometimes and she always wants attention. But yea, the hard kibbles are great, but I think ately she's just been swollowing the pieces whole :Q. I thought about soft food cause maybe her teeth were bothering her. but i dunno. Yea, She's gweat.

And i left for college and came back for break and my family had neglected her nails and they were getting REALLY long. 🙁 But yea....she's gweat. 😀

Hmmm, sounds like you know my ex and her dog caretaking habbits.

The 360 pad thing used to anger me the most.

Heheh it's been awesome so far, my girlfriend and I named him NINJA, got his tags made, groomed, and got him MINI CHUNKS from NutroMax... looks good!

I'm just worried about his history, and like that guy in this post said, there's no such thing as a free doggy =T

Heheh, it is my friend though, so I trust him in that sense 🙂
