I just acquired two-hundred individual century old daguerreotypes and thought I might share a few with you. I have many more and I do know these are worth a pretty penny to collectors.

I do not have a scanner and had to work with a borrowed digital camera and some makeshift photography lab equipment.

Hailey's Comet (Flash was on for the purpose of capturing the label)
Hailey's Comet (again) <---Fixed Link
Interior shot of the Observatory Fixed the cameras white balance for better B&W contrast. The others are yellow because I used some yellowed Tupperware with a bright 9000k compact florescent bulb behind it.

Plus many more pictures of the Sun, Details of the moon, and fascinating celestial objects.

More to come

Does anyone know of a professional service that can digitally scan some of my for me? Preferably someone with the proper equipment

Yes and they are still used today. Celluloid film had not yet become popular and was still in it's infancy.

I have a backlit scanner that would probably do what you want, HP 4890, but you are not local. You can probably find someone with a similar scanner in your area. Those are definitely cool.

By very few people. I just wonder why are they using daguerreotypes at the time. Was there something specific in its application, as so far you seem to have astronomy related images.

They were from an old mans house in Florida about 2 miles from me. When he died a lady was throwing this stuff in the garbage and one of my neighbors walked by and pulled them out. He's had them for 3 years and sold them to me for cheap.

I suppose it's the same reason why digital photography took more than 20 years after it's invention and marketplace introduction before it caught on. Celluloid was invented around circa 1890 and these pictures range from 1899 to 1913 (possibly 1915). Dagurreotype photography was still in common use during the 1930's. You can see Dorothea Lange in 1936 holding her daguerreotype camera.

I was thinking the same. They can have them if I am reimbursed for the expenses already put forth. Sold to the university with out profit.
