Went from Senior Software Developer to new job as Software Engineer II. Pay and benefits are much more and opportunity and potential is 10x better but lost a rung in the title.

Thoughts?

No downside. Salary history is more important, and everyone knows titles have a ton of BS factor in them.

Congrats :).

I listened to a lecture by one of the higher ups at Microsoft. He worked on one product, worked up to senior manager or something. He then switched to another product and started as a lowly developer. Then he switched to another product again and worked up to senior developer. Now he's leading one of the larger products at the company.

The whole point of his lecture was that title and level doesn't matter.

It is all about the bottom line ($). Personal satisfaction & life style are factors of course, but if those are equal ... then it is all about the bottom line.

Titles aren't important. The individual contributor title at my company above "Sr Engineer" is "MTS" (Member of techincal staff), which at a lot of companies, MTS means Manufacturing Technical Services or some other lowly tech position. It's difficult to compare titles between one company and another.

Its kind of like how a Salesperson would make more than a Manager.. Sounds like win.

More money is a good thing. The titles may not be all that meaningful outside the context of your current workplace when you list your employment history on a resume, so I don't think it will necessarily look bad. Congratulations on your new windfall :)

Thanks all!

My main concern was that both jobs are pretty competitive so I am stepping down in position. Also, I don't want my title to subtract from my influence on the team. Although professionals shouldn't let such an arbitrary point become a communication block, I've seen it more often than not.

I'll be entering near the cap of the new position with the confidence I'll be promoted to a Senior position within the year.

It's a little scary leaving a nice, cushy, secure job for something new!

That can apply to any line of work. You'll be fine. use all that extra money for a nice bottle of wine and celebrate (assuming that's your type of thing, of course).

I hire developers at my job. Honestly, I never ever look at what they list as a title, I only look at the pay they were getting in the past.
