A new home is being built across the street from me and the builders insist on working earlier and later than appropriate. I haven't said anything so far, but I'm about to. I was debating whether to go over talk to them, possibly getting in an altercation, or just calling the police to speak with them.

They've done a lot of after/before hours work, but the highlights have been:

-Running a loud gas-powered saw from about 9-9:30pm while my kids were trying to sleep on a school night.
-Starting up noisy equipment as early as 6am.
-Digging up the street to lay some lines at 6am on a Saturday.

The other day they woke my up on my day off at 5:55am driving in some huge piece of equipment. It was the final straw and I was pissed.

But then I remembered that it's just some working men trying to make an honest living by building someone a nice home. Why do I need to be a prick about it? I put a pillow over my head and went back to sleep.

First establish if this is even in violation your city's noise bylaws.

If so, report to the city.

That's what I was thinking. I only wrote the post to point out how often we get bent over stupid shit. Way to much outrage floating around today. The stress of it only hurts us.

It will be a funny story to tell your new neighbors when they turn out to be cool as hell from your karma of not being a douche.

that would annoy the crap out of me too, but i would probably just suck it up and move on. the more they work, the sooner they will be done.

Those hours are pretty ridiculous. My town is 8A-6P weekdays, 9A-6P saturdays, prohibitted on sunday and holidays. I would go talk to them and let them know it is too early/late. If they ignore your complaints, call the cops.

Maybe try striking a balance between foaming at the mouth and being a doormat? It works pretty well for me.

Freudian slips are not going to make it rain on them.

My town is the exact same. Call the town, they will deal with it.

This, there are these types of ordinances in place just to cover these situations I admire the crew's work ethic but they have to be respectful of your rights as well..

The early A.M. noise I can understand. Can't blame the guys for wanting to get as much done as possible before it gets really hot. The late night stuff would get on my nerves though.

I usually will look it up when I'm picking a place to live. 10pm-6am noise "curfews" are pretty typical.

Experienced contractors and/or construction workers know the rules locally and follow them the the letter.

Construction noise, lawnmowers, etc, are allowed 7AM - 10PM here, so that might be allowed there too.

7am-8pm I wouldn't mind, before of after those hours I would go and have a civil word with them and explain the situation. There is no reason they can't work after those hours but leave the noisy stuff for the middle of the day. Screw "city regs" it all comes down to common decency which we seem to be lacking a lot these days.

I had this same issue when they were building a plaza behind my house. Bylaws are 7am to 9pm weekdays and 8 to 8 on weekends. They were starting at 5am seven days a week with their damn trucks going "beep beep beep". Complained to the town several times, took video, sent photos and they never bothered to investigate. So now my attitude is the bylaws are just guidelines.

Since then I've caught the same plaza running a large vacuum truck to clean the parking lot, at 4am, running a power washer at 12am, and blowing leaves at 1am. I just video tape it and tweet them using the local hash tag. Makes the mall look bad. They haven't done it since.

Heh - we had a house being built next to us about 5 or 6 years ago. They were here from 6am to 8pm literally 7 days a week....for 6 freaking months. He never had a crew more than 4 people so it took a loooong time. Property sizes are pretty big here so it wasn't close enough to be a problem for me, except a couple of times I wanted to sit in the hot tub and enjoy some peace and quiet on Sunday mornings and they'd be banging their hammers and running their saws.

As it turned out, the builder got very sick, and probably out of money, and construction stopped for almost a year, then started up again for another 3 months solid but only 6 days a week this time. He ended up going broke and the house was foreclosed; a friend of mine picked it up for about 40 cents on the dollar last year. So now we have neighbors we like and he got a great house cheap, so it was worth it in the end.

In Idaho aren't those contractors free to do what they want without the nanny state interfering?

get ear plugs for whole family :D

I wouldn't complain, simply because they can mess up your property when you are not at home, as a retribution.

In my county, the 'disturbing the peace' card can be dealt anytime. I had some a-holes a few years polishing the basement slap for a new home on my street at 1AM in the morning.

I took a camera (which scared the latinos) and then called the police. Problem solved. Had they not, I would have taken my impact drill and ruined the slab at 2AM.

6am is definitely way too early. They should start at like 7 earliest but idealy 8. 9pm is not really that bad, but by then they should really be wrapping things up unless it's Friday then honestly who cares how long they work till.

Considering this is temporary I'd just live with it till it's done. Have fun once they start on the roof though. Loud air compressor + nail gun. :p

Though I will confess, I have used powder actuated tools at like 11pm. LOL.
