My main had drive is a maxtor 160 gig, and i installed a western digital 250 has a slave on the same ide cable. when i started my pc windows detected it and it shows up under device manager, but not under my computer where my other drives show up.

You need to go into Computer Management and partition, format, and assign a drive letter.

In Windows XP...

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Manager

Hmm, sounds like maybe you had XP SP1 when you installed Windows, then afterwards upgraded to SP2. Is that the case? How many total GB's does it have for the 160GB drive when you look at "My Computer?"
