I went overseas as part of a school program over the summer. When I got back the school set up a photo contest, asking for photos of our trip overseas. 4 categories, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category.

I got an email saying I won 3rd place in 1 category. Then I went to the place where they hung up the winning photos to look at the photos.

I saw my 3rd place photo.
Then I saw a photo of mine that I had submitted but I wasn't told had won.
Then I saw a photo I took but my friend had submitted in HER name...

Uhhh...

Category: Faces of the World, 3rd place, Traditional Korean Dance Performer

I'd be pissed. You should bring in your camera with the original photo and show them she wasn't the original photographer. Friend or not, that's bullsh!t.

Nice pictures....I would say something like...."How could she have taken the picture if she's in it???"

Who cares, you know and everyone that went with you knows that you took those pictures. Bask in your own glory.

Sure, you can win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in a contest with hundreds of entries, but you can't win the ATOT contest run by blurredvision :p :)

Congratulations on your wins!

Actually, I only won 3rd. I have no idea what places the other ones got. Anyway, it was more about subject matter than WOW factor. The first place in my Faces of the World category was just a washed out snapshot of some tribesman in Africa. I didn't go anywhere TOO exotic, which killed my chances a little bit.

Also they said they wanted to use the photos for advertising purposes, so I thought they really wanted some WOW, happy happy pictures, not your more typical deep-thought pictures. If I'd known they also took pictures like the latter, I might have submitted ones like these:

I'm too busy to participate in blurred's contest :(
Actually, last time I had something all prepared, but when I went to go upload it I found out that voting had already began :p

Dang, that was 3rd place :Q Wow, 1st and 2nd must have been extra special. Nice pic! Great comp. They must have given you third because the subject matter made it like shooting ducks in a barrel :p

I'm really impressed how little noise is in your "faces" pic, considering it was taken at iso800

Hey fuzzy, I got a couple random questions...
Do you always shoot in Av (Aperture Priority)?
Did you shoot these pics in RAW? Or do you generally shoot in RAW?

I run all my high ISO shots through Noise Ninja, so that cuts down on the noise a lot. I wasn't too thrilled with the sharpness because to me the face was a bit out of focus.

I almost always shoot in aperture priority, and use the exposure compensation to, well, compensate for any errors in metering that the camera has. I just think it's quicker than shooting in manual. The only time when I shoot in manual is when I want to absolutely lock exposure for whatever reason, such as when I'm shooting panoramas and want all the images of the pano to have the same exposure. I shoot in shutter priority when I absolutely need a certain shutter speed, such as when it's dark and I'm handholding and I absolutely need at least 1/50s to get a steady picture. So I force the camera to shoot at 1/50s to get that steady picture and then do any tweaks to the exposure (brightness) of the picture during RAW processing.

And yes, I always shoot in RAW. With the camera's speed, cheap storage, and the speed of computers nowadays, IMO there's no reason not to shoot RAW, even though I also believe that RAW has great benefits over JPEG. The only time I shoot in JPEG is when I'm shooting RAW+small JPEG. The small JPEG is there for easy browsing in Windows Explorer. But now I don't even do this because my RAW editor automatically generates thumbnails for me that are quick to load.

unfortunately, my rebel xti doesn't allow me to take RAW+small JPEG. It's only RAW+LgJPEG or RAW only

Yup. I have a Rebel XT and it does the same.

I would just shoot in RAW and grab yourself a good RAW editor like Capture One or Bibble. Bibble is really nice. It's kinda clunky, but it has so many features. Sometimes I don't even need to use Photoshop for touch ups when I use Bibble.
