This is no hoax. I recommend everyone try and catch a show on PBS called Trade Secrets, or at least read the transcripts here. You might also want to change your title to something more decsriptive, this is a very serious problem that rarely gets much exposure.
 
hm...phenol. Isn't that a component of the toxin in items such as Diet Coke.

I remember on a co-op at a GE Plastics plant in Indiana, we were told during a safety orientation that if we smelled something like fresh-cut grass, it was Phenol and to get the heck out of Dodge as it was quite lethal.

I dunno about diet coke, but it's the active ingredient in Chloraseptic. It's nasty stuff. My dad works in a plant that manufactures phenol.

I think it's the aspartame. Phenol is a component of that.
 
Aspartame is composed of aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. People with PKU shouldn't injest this substance. The fear of methonal is unfounded since we get more methanol from other foods.
