I was driving to go pickup my girlfriend and the damned thing ran across the first lane of the highway and by the time I saw it (it was pitch black) I swurved off into the grass, but my mirror caught it. All I heard was a thump and my mirror was pressed upto my window. So I immediately called 911... at the time I told them that I thought the moose was fine and they said "OK, well if you have damage, contact your insurance... bye!" Errrr... duhhh!

Anyway, I saw two trucks stopped about a half mile behind me on the side of the road,so I got out and went to see if everyone was OK. Right as I got out a guy stopped in front of me and asked what happened. Then he said he had a .45 in case he "needed to put the thing out of it's misery"... so we both walked back to the trucks .25 down the road trying not to get hit on the side of hte road in the process. When we got there, I could see the whole frontend on one of the trucks was crushed and the other was just a person who saw it. Apparently after I hit it, it ran to other side and in front of this guy.

Anyway, the moose was still walking around, infact it cross the highway AGAIN, all four lanes. People were screeching their tires and barely missing it. Not bloody at all amazingly, though I have no doubt the thing was going to die from the internal injuries.

At this point I'm thinking "There really isn't anything else I can do here" as they had already called the Troopers and they were on their way. So I say "Well, $hit now I gotta worry about it's mother (cuz someone mentioned a second moose) trampling my ass on the way to back to the truck." and the guy with the gun said "Nah, just stay behind me. "

So I get back in my truck and get back onto the highway. I get to my girlfriend's house and she says "Your freaking late! We gotta go now!" I try to tell her what just happened, but she didn't seem to think it was a big deal. Anyway, I dropped her off to pickup her truck and left her ass for the night.

On my way back home, they were still loading the truck that hit it head on onto a wrecker and two troopers where there. I didn't see the moose, so I don't know if it just walked off or if they shot it.

I got back home and checked my truck, no damage luckily!

Tonight sucks....

btw: Guys, just for comparison a moose can be over 1600lbs and can be over 7 feet tall front hoof to shoulder. This definitely ain't your usually deer you findi n the lower 48 (I'm in Alaska)

Yah no kidding! I stopped at one like this last Christmas.... Adult moose versus early 90s cadillac. I'll give you one guess which won! The moose apparently got knocked off it's feet and fell on the hood and windshield. It embedded glass and shards of metal in the passenger and the driver had a cut on his forehead. That moose was definitely dying as it's leg was broken and it laid down in the snow near the crash. Anyway, the Caddy was totalled.... those things can do some major damage. Especially with cars. This was 100 miles from the nearest town... so it took the troopers awhile to get there. I stayed with the people and wait till they got other help.

Jugernot, was that on the Richardson Highway near the Badger Road overpass (Fairbanks end of Badger Road)?

If that was 7-ish, I just drove through there and saw the Trooper with his lights going, but nothing else. Couldn't figure out what the hell he was doing there. Probably last guy on the scene.

Now that I think of it, I also saw three moose off in the field next to the new overpass when I drove home after work tonight. But I drove back to Fairbanks on an errand, and then on the way home the second time I saw the Trooper lit up but no one else.

The actually hitting of the moose happened around 6:00, but yes... I drove back home around 7ish and they were still loading the truck onto the wrecker.

In Ontario if you hit it and/or kill it, it is yours. You just have to notify either the OPP or Min. of Env.
