I understand the need to lock certain threads, but it's getting a little out of hand in OT. If you don't want OT to be just that, change the name.

Examples from the front page just as I logged in this AM:

A harmless movie quote.

Shoe service rant.

A dream recollection thread.

A soft drink thread.

A thread regarding finals/300 pastiche.

I fully expect this thread to be locked without explanation, but whoever is doing this needs to go back a read the unwritten rules of AT. None of these threads were even close to lock material.

IMHO, if you carry on like this you'll have a backlash and an even bigger job locking the resulting threads/banning/IP checking and so on.

Like I said, this is just an example of the rabid pointless locking. There was even a thread about it in OT, but guess what, it got locked.

Restraint with the lock button is needed.

Second thread seemed to be going nowhere fast
Third thread has nothing be contributed to it.
Fifth thread also seemed to have nothing being contributed to it.

People should not try to use ATOT as their own blogs/myspace.

there are two kinds of ATF mod ... 'tolerant' and 'intolerant' ... with many shades in-between

they are "human" and they tend to lock threads - or allow them - based on their experience and personal set of morals

if they see *no value* or a thread *deteriorating* they use their own judgment

--and i think the "Bloody-Sunday" Mod moved to the Sat shift ... that's all
[post your nonsense threads, earlier] ;)

That would pretty much get rid of about 95% of the posts in OT these days.

and kill a lot of ad revenue and probably relegate this forum to complete obscurity

a few mods have a very different set of personal rules then the other 'normal' mods

--i tend to call them 'intolerant' .. and 'they' seem to now have a "shift" on Saturday
[kind of like certain 'teachers' you hated]

--just realize it and *beware*
[be aware]

obviously this 'intolerant' mod is otherwise doing an excellent job for our forums
-i have seen this off-and-on for 7 years ....

. . . you could always wait for them to "retire"

Really? I thought the TOS required us to post anytime anything interesting happened in our lives or every day (which ever comes first, for the quite obvious reason).... :)

Your post reminds me of my favorite Tina Fey commend 'Alanis, not everything you write in your journal needs to be a song'

good post ... i missed it ... quoted in part:
In the past few months, the amount of useless posts in the Off Topic area has increased exponentially. Our job is to moderate such threads. If a thread that I feel is improper, useless, etc., comes along, it will be locked. An explanation, however, is not always as quickly forthcoming, for whatever reason. If your thread is locked, assume it is for a reason. Feel free to PM us to ask why. Posting questions such as: ?Why was my thread locked?? will not accomplish anything but having one more thread locked, and upsetting one, if not more, of us.

In summary:

Please limit the amount of useless threads to none. It is much easier to moderate yourselves than to enter into an argument with us about it. Any dissenters will be shot.

exponential increase in *useless* posts in OT

IMPOSSIBLE

it was "supposedly exponential" when i left it 3 years ago
:Q

there isn't enough bandwith in the universe for that kind of unchecked growth over 3 years

surely the mod exaggerates :p

-don't shoot
