Anyone else absolutely adore the Remote Desktop feature of XP Pro?

I left my rig on while I went home, and I'm now RD'd into it. Managing FTP, HTTP serving and keeping tabs on my firewall - all from a few hundred miles away. I even had a roommate stick a CD in and burned a disc remotely. 🙂

Remote Desktop - one of the few things MS did right. 🙂

Well there was plenty of software that MS could take a look at and make sure they did get it right.
 
i still prefer VNC, but whatever floats yer boat!

its awesome to VNC into my computer using my iPaq and do stuff...
 
For window's based PC's, there is simply no better alternative than RDP.

It most certainly is a top notch feature.
 
I love it to no end... I can get more stuff done on machines that I would have to drive across town, not I can do it at home!!!!😀
 
Terminal Services is best on Server versions of Windows. I can be logged into my .NET Enterprise Server managing the firewall and NAT settings (all while the dialup connection is online), while my parents are logged into their account on the same server browing the "intarweb." 😛
 
ya know, "Remote Desktop" has been around for many years... Win NT4 had varients with it, as did NT 3.51 w/ Citrix WinFrame, and Win2k Server has it. It's also called terminal services...

hate to burst your bubble -- and Microsoft didn't make the technology... they licensed it from Citrix.
 
Meh, VNC pwns me...I use it to remote desktop to my computer from my linux based PDA (Zaurus), or from any computer/pda to another one running MACOS, Linux, Windows, or whatever. And it's a REAL remote desktop sort of proggie, unlike Remote Desktop from XP that is more like a terminal.

VNC has it's advantages but strictly in MS enviroment, Terminal Services / Remote Desktop COMPLETELY owns VNC. faster and quicker.

How much more "Real" can you get from complete desktop control, copy and paste from client to terminal, and printing to a local printer from the terminal desktop?

How much more "Real" can you get from complete desktop control, copy and paste from client to terminal, and printing to a local printer from the terminal desktop?

VNC can actually restart the computer including the CTL ALT DEL to login. w/ Remote Desktop / Terminal Services, you only login to an account but you don't actually log in the remote system. not a huge difference except when installing certain types of programs.

For specialty things, i like VNC, for everyday uses i prefer remote desktop / Terminal Services.

From what I understand, Remote Desktop sort of generates a virtual desktop at the controller's end, and the person who is being "controlled" cannot see what is going on, as they are logged out or "switched" off when the remote desktop program is activated. With VNC, it is supposedly a little more direct less "virtual" (EDIT: See above for examples. 🙂) and can be used with the current logged in user watching the activities of the controller.

Remote Desktop via XP Pro and Terminal Services / Remote Desktop via 2000 Server are very similar but different in 1 respect. W/ the server the remote user logs on as another user and has NO impact on user at the server. W/ XP Pro a remote user disables the user at the desktop and they get a blank screen.

if VNC would cache the way that Remote Desktop does, i'd stick w/ VNC but i haven't found a version of VNC yet that is as quick and responsive as Remote Desktop.
 
I've mainly got experience only with the Win2k server and for what I need it to do, it's far more efficient than any other remote program out there. With the web service I can log into my servers from any PC with IE 5.5 or higher and administer them without the need for any other programs. VERY nice for those emergency situations when I'm on vacation and need to do some emergency work on a server but don't have my own PC to use. All I need to do is swing over to a library with a 'net connection or a friends house and get to work.

Even logging into desktops with it, I still find it faster and more reliable than any other remote appliction out there.

I like ssh too. Especially from linux box to linux box. You can run your X server across the network and have it transmit single programs if you want. I had linux box 1 as my workstation running linux and running gkrellm as a monitor. I ssh-ed into my router box and ran a gkrellm instance across the network so I could monitor that one as well. No need to have the entire desktop running across it. Pretty cool stuff.
