As far as I can tell, you can't go wrong with Seagate. I had a 3 y/o seagate 15 gig from an OEM box that still works perfectly...well, till I crackied it open, but I meant to do that. Most OEM manufacturers use Seagates. Frankly, they get my nod for best drives. I mean, I don't have any personal experience with Maxtor, but when you hear so many bad stories, it just makes sense to avoid them. An ounce of prevention, eh?

(40gig single platter drives) and the old DiamondMax 60's are not so great too.. my friend had one of those, failed.. my 30 gig failed, and the only one still working is a 20gig in my 3rd and oldest PC. the only drives I've had 'decent' luck with have been the DiamondMax9 series, but even then, they are not all that great (still had 2 or 3 go down) but either way, my view on them is tarnished.
Ditto, although I recently had to pull a 160GB WD JB drive from this system, I think that it might have been what was causing some of my occasional slowdown/pausing/glitching problems. Not really sure. I had a 60GB single-platter DM+9 fail on me in only six months. I bought a 250GB, after telling myself I wouldn't buy a Maxtor again, and I'm crossing my fingers. So far, so good, but performance isn't as good as my 80GB WD JB from several years ago that is still the primary system drive.

had a Maxtor in an HP my dad bought for his office, broke down within 2.5 years of normal use, was a loud sucker too. WDs are good drives, personally never had a problem with one, but Seagates are still my fav, silent, fast, and alot cooler running than the Maxtor I had
