i heard alot of problems about maxtor in the forums

Of course it will have problems... they are only the worst hardware manufacturer known to man.

my supplier stopped carying them cause they fail so much. 15% return rate on the DiamondMax 8's alone.. I don't put anything I trust on any Maxtor drives anymore.
 
I have owned HDDs from every major brand, and they have all failed at 1 point, no more then the other

im my system i currently have 2 maxtors a seagate and a WD, these are all fine, nothing wring with maxtors
 
Just because some people have had problems with Maxtor doesnt mean you will. This place is kind of like a Tech support forum isnt it? Not everyone comes here to praise a certain product they use. If you come into a tech support forum, people will post their problems with the product they are using.

Ditto. I've had 2 of them in my rig and an ancient model in another system that's been running for almost 7 years...no problems whatsoever.
 
In my years I have had 8 Maxtor 80 GB HDD's and not ONE died on me. You want to know why there are so many people who complain about a product after it breaks on them? It's because they cannot take care of their own goddamn merchandise. They break/fall apart/fail on them because they fail to take good care of what they spent their money on; AND WHEN it finally does fail they blame the manufacturer and not themselves. Sure there are those HDD's or any other product out on the market that are flawed because of a minor detail but so what, nothing is perfect. For the sole owner of this thread you may purchase whatever HDD your heart desires because frankly, nothing is failproof. Just know that when someone goes mudslinging on a product there is a 70% chance its that person's failure as a customer rather than the manufacturers fault.
 
i currently have 6 maxtors in service in my house, they are all working fine, some of them over 4 years old. i use maxtor exclusivly, they are great drives
 
I have owned WD, Seagate, Fuj, and Maxtor. So far the Seagate is my favorite but I never had a problem with the maxtor, just a loud sucker, even for a small size.

I am sorry, and I don't like to be like this, but that is honestly one of the dumbest things I have read in recent days on here... if a drive fails, it's not anyone's fault but the manufacturers IF it's seeing NORMAL use in regular working conditions.. which mine all do. I have Seagate and Fujitsu drives (from back in the day) none of THEM ever have any problems... but the DiamondMax 8's fail left right and center. trash.
 
I have used 2 maxtors. 1 died and I got it replaced haven't had a problem since. I think maybe mine failed because too many reformats/partitioning???(I was using it on a test box...). Other than that it's quieter than my Raptors that I have now and I use it for storage. no problems here.
 
CraigRT, What series exactly are those ? I have 10 Maxtors, 4 Seagate, and 2 wd in the house now. The oldest ones are the Maxtors. The other 6 I got in the last year. They range in age from about 3 years old to current.
 
I've had dozens of Maxtors over the years. Haven't had one fail yet. I've actually had more problems with Western Digitals.

Same here. I've had better luck with the 9 Maxtors than I have with 6 WD's and 3 :Q *gasp* :Q Seagates.
 
yeah I haven't had too much luck with maxtors. I have a 40gig 2 year old maxtor that crapped out on me and a 120 gig maxtor that I bought on Black Friday 2003 which crapped out on me. I personally don't trust them to much... they remind me of the dual IBM Deathstars that I used to have... ugh. In my personal opinion, I don't think you'll go too wrong with WD. all my computers at home use that and so far they're running flawlessly.

DiamondMax8 are bad.. (40gig single platter drives) and the old DiamondMax 60's are not so great too.. my friend had one of those, failed.. my 30 gig failed, and the only one still working is a 20gig in my 3rd and oldest PC. the only drives I've had 'decent' luck with have been the DiamondMax9 series, but even then, they are not all that great (still had 2 or 3 go down) but either way, my view on them is tarnished. and the supplier I buy all my parts from dropped them because the drives were returned so frequently. now they only stock Seagate. they can get whatever you want, but if you want something off the shelf, it's a Seagate. 🙂
 
I like the quiet operation of my new Maxtor. Never had a problem in the 2 months I've owned it.
My oldest son has a 3 year old Seagate. Never had a problem.
My other 2 newer systems have Western Digitals in them. No problems.

Here's one for the record books.
I have a 20 gig WD that went through a major fire at my home in March 2000. The computer actually melted to the desk and the case had to be broken apart to retreive the HD. The HD was covered with a film of soot that imbedded into it's case. Couldn't even read the info on the outside. When I took the HD to the shop to see if they could get some of the data off they plugged it into a test system and it fired right up and worked perfectly and didn't lose anything. I had them install it as a second drive in the new system they were building for me. It served as a second HD in that system until last year. I removed it from that system when the MB went bad and put it in a new small machine I put together for my youngest son. It still works perfectly to this day.

I don't think that any one harddrive manufacturer is worse or better than any other. "They are the big three" because they research and build products that should last. Sometimes you just run into a bad batch or possibly an inferior design. In any event, be it a Maxtor, Seagate or Western Digital, they all could operate for what seems like forever or they all could fail at any moment.

Go with the best performance and warranty and back up your systen to other forms of media regularly and you should come out ahead of the game.

Yeah, top notch due to lot's of practice

Every Maxtor drive I've owned has failed me in short time due to no apparent reason.
Maxtor is one brand I avoid.
Budget bottom feeder brand,good for OEM boxes i.e. Dell,Gateway,HP

Want troublfree performance and quality ... buy Seagate or Western Digital.
