I heard a lot of negative comments about AOL

Um, they cater to a target market.

Those who don't care how terribly their product destroys an install of Windows.

I dunno.. the first time I got on the Internet (maybe 7-8 years ago), I used AOL. I was so 1337 with my 14.4kbps modem. Then again.. there were those BBS that I used to log into on my Apple IIGS.

$28/ month for dialup

$65/ month for broadband

i can get the same speed with earthlink through time warner for HALF THE PRICE

cable internet - $33/month for me 😀

And curious to know....what did they do that made them so evil?

Everything everyone else has said - not to mention the incessant, nonstop, crushing onslaught of unsolicited cd-roms in the mail, and the fact that you could get broadband for $10 more / month than you pay for AOL's sh!tty dialup. They prey on n00bs who don't know any better.

I don't really hate AOL itself, because they provid a service that some people (not me) find valuable.

but their users tend to be really bothersome.

insane prices

the reference standard in bloatware

buggy software that is difficult to troubleshoot (bad for us techies)

puts icons and memory-hogging programs everywhere

uses fake "hardware" instead of just dialing up the modem like every other program (don't know if this is still true)

tricks people into paying extra for the same content they can get anywhere for less

crappy email utility

their servers block legitimate emails from certain ISPs

incessant and wasteful advertising practices

the users

aol is fine. i just think it's a bit expensive to pay $10 a month on top of your DSL, and that you can't recover your SN after you cancel AOL.

other than that, their IM is one of the most revolutionary messaging tool.

what's revolutionary about it? ICQ used to be available around the same time. Well before that, I remember someone messaging me while I was working at a VAX 11/780 workstation (around 1985)... IM's have been around a lot longer than AOL.

Their new commercials are enough to make me hate them.

 to NetZero for totally spoofing and ripping on their commercials.

AOL is pretty much for internet noobs, which we all were at one point. so we deride our own period of n00bness by saying how horrible AOL is, even though most people on here have probably used it at one time or another.
