I hear you can get a table at a fancy restaurant if you slip the host a $50

I wouldn't even want to go to a place that's so busy you'd need to do that to get a table.

And you can eat out for free by going to a soup kitchen. What's your fucking point?

Soup kitchens have way longer lines than high-end restaurants, and if you try to slip someone a $50 to get to the front, people start rioting. But if you're into bum fights, that's a pretty good way to get dinner AND a show.

Might be technically illegal, maybe.

You're offering an employee a personal benefit to influence their behavior as it relates to their employer's business.

I think it depends on whether or not the employer condones the practice. If the host secretly pockets the money and seats you first even though policy says first come first serve - illegal. If the restaurant is just offering to let you pay to cut in line, or if they say the host can use their personal discretion on who gets seated next - legal (Based on my reading)

But it'd be difficult to prove, and at worst it'd be a class A misdemeanor.
Not worth anyone's time to prosecute.

In Vegas, the entire city is run by tips. I always skip the huge as cab line after clubs or before clubs by slipping them a $5 or $10.

I've been to enough upscale places (supposedly) to know they aren't worth the waiting period. They are all price and flash. Not that I've ever had to do anything out a month. I think a week at most, and most times, a few days. If a place says it has a 3 month waiting period, it isn't about the food. Granted I'm not a majillionaire...so maybe they aren't the best places on earth :) but I get annoyed waiting 5 minutes in the drive thru.

The best restaurants are the unknown out of the way mom and pop places. Then I tip based on how awesome the food and service is.

Meh, apples and orange really. Some Mom and Pop restaurants are indeed amazing, but some really suck, same goes for the five star places. They are usually doing very different things though and I don't necessarily go for the same reasons.

Yep, agreed there. They aren't all winners.

I've got into San Francisco restaurants in < 10 minutes on packed nights more than one occasion just by being friendly with the host. Usually tip the host when they can accommodate, but it's a thank you rather than a bribe. "hi, dinner for two tonight. It's last minute and I didn't plan reservations, but I'd really appreciate if you can help me out."

Despite what people think greasing palms still works. I have used it on occasion, there have been a few times I slipped union workers some cash to get our crate quicker for booth breakdown at the end of conventions.
