I haven't played any new games in about 3 years... Need some help

Hi guys... my computer got a little old to play the newer games a few years ago. Well, I finally bought a new system Compy386 and I'd like to catch up on what i've missed. What games do you think I should go out and get?

P.S. My components are all currently "out for delivery" 😀

Civilization IV (for TBS)
HL2 and Doom 3 ( single player FPS), but I have heard good things about FEAR and the demo for Prey was excellent.
BF2 and CS:Source for multiplayer FPS)
World of Warcraft (MMORPG)

Well, what games did you play before you stopped gaming?
That's the info that's help you best. For now I'll give you a list of some new games.

FPS:
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Counter-Strike: Source
Quake IV
FEAR
Far Cry

RTS:
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War
Star Wars: Empire at War
Rome: Total War
Medieval II: Total War (IDK if this is out yet)
Command and Conquer (any of them)
Age of Empire III
Trash (I'll give you a link if you want to know more

MMORPG:
Guild Wars
World of Warcraft

thx guys... i basically played anything that was good. I'm really looking forward to playing empire at war (avid star wars fan). Unfortunately, the full time job sorta makes mmorpg's out of the question, at least if I want to have a decent char. It'll be fun to play all the new FPS's, are they still only like 12-15 hours? What is that Trash game you were talking about. All the others look somewhat familiar?

No, thanks to major companies realizing it is cheaper to make a shorter game and the people are still willing to pay $60 for that short game, game length has dropped big time. For example, PREY (from what I hear) is about 9 hours long.

Trash is setup like SC but is alto easier to get into and kick some a$$. Everything is made of trash just like how in SC everything is made of minerals. But in SC, if something explodes, you can't reuse the minerals, but in Trash, you can reuse the trash 😀 And best of all,
Inhuman Games is a small, independent game developer located in Redmond, WA.
Just DL the setup and it will run as the demo and if you like it, go to the site and buy it (IIRC, it works the same way as the worms games did back in the day where you go online and pay for the code)

bah... bastards.... Their writers probably aren't good enough to come up w/ a good enough story line to make a longer game.

haha I'll have to try out that trash game at some point... There's a lot to do! one of the bonuses for not playing 🙂

A good deal is Half-Life 2 Episode 1 $20 for 6-8 hours. Just be sure to play Half-Life and Half-Life 2 first 😛

I played halflife a LOONG time ago... but played through it two or three times... I vaguely remember a creepy guy in a suit at the end of the first one... is the story good in the new one good? (no spoilers pls hehe)

Not sure what genre you particularly enjoy, so I'll be broad in my suggestions:

Oblivion - Probably the most anticipated RPGs on the PC in years. With a completely open ended word that allows you to go just about anywhere -be prepared to put in a ton of hours (I personally put in 113 hours to beat the game). There is alot to do here, and it's hardly ever dull if you're into this type of gaming. The GFX are absolutely stunning, the music (composed by Jeremy Soule no less) is perfect, and the environments are incredibilty detailed. The AI is some of the most amazingly reactive design yet. Heads up, though, there monsters automatically scale to your level. Thats about my only gripe with the game.

Gothic 3 - I cannot say much about this game, but it's getting some pretty good reviews. If you played any of the previous version and enjoyed yourself -it's for you.

World of Warcraft - Certianly you've heard of it. If you've yet to play a MMO, then this is your chance to go straight to the top and try the best (that just happens to be the most user-friendly design of the bunch.) It's a ton of fun if you can get in with some friends, especially a guild, but beware....it's highly addictive and incures a monthly fee.

Titan Quest - Not really an RPG, but more of an ACTION RPG (much like diablo). Lets just make it simple -if you enjoyed Diablo/Diablo II, pick this game up. It improves on some of the little annoyances of the Diablo series. Tons of fun.

Half-Life 2 - An Absolute MUST MUST MUST! I wrote up an extensive review on the boards here, but the search funstion is broken so I canot find and link it. Seriously, probably the best FPS ever made, and quite possibily one of the best games ever made. This is just my opinion.

Half-Life 2:Episode 1 - See above. 🙂

Prey - A solid, fun FPS with a decent story. The game has good pacing and is about 8-10 hours (depending on how you play) long. I recommend it because it's so purdy too. 🙂

F.E.A.R. - I'm not a huge fan of the game, but it was quite popular and a ton of people loved it. If you want a "scary" FPS game, go for it. Warning! The entire game appears to take place in the same office building.

Condemned - A FANTASTIC first person action adventure game. Really, the game is probably one of the most scariest games I've ever played. The atmosphere is incredible. Highly recommended.

Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2 - If you're a fan of the LOTR movies, and enjoy RTSs -this game is for you. The first one is a little more cinematic in that it uses a ton of images, FMV and music from the trilogy than the second one. I'm not one for movie licenses and games, but these are just done so well -I still play it casualyl to this day -both of them.

....I'm running out of time, but those are a few good suggestions.

Have you played Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) I & II?

I was great, II is supposed to be worthwhile if you apply the fan-made patches.

Yea it's a good story. Very atmospheric too, plays silky smooth on new machines, and the physics are still the best out there.

Excellent suggestion! I played KoTOR (first one) 5 freak'n times all the way through! Twice as a good guy, and 3 times Evil.

i always end up being good in RPGs where you can choose alignment... always... 😀😀

As far as singleplayer FPSs go, my recommendations would be Chronicles of Riddick and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. I thought those were easily the highlights of the last two years. SC: Double Agent will also be available very soon (it's already out on the 360) and will probably be another classic, if the previous game was any indication.

I can't understand why so many people liked this. I found it to be the most boring and underwhelming game I've played in years, on multiple levels. I suppose we all have different tastes.

You need to come over to the dark side my friend. 🙂

It's painfully fun. You do end up alienating some of your potential allies, however.

Great suggestions so far. I would like to add emphasis on the following (they are also in order I would suggest playing them in; this includes MANY factors):

- HL2, and Episode 1.
- Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
- KotOR
- Riddick
- Oblivion
- Condemned

This way, you can ride the HL: Episode 2 hype by completing HL2 and Ep1 soon. Splinter Cell is different enough in pacing to give you a good experience after HL2. KotOR has seen a bunch of nice patches, so you can move on to it. Riddick is unexpectedly fun but short. Oblivion brings you back to a HUGE game, and should have all of its best patches and mods finished by the time you get around to it. Condemned will have more price drops by the time you get there, and should not be played at the same time as Riddick.
