Computer Specs:

P3 600 mhz.
256 rdram
30 gig hd
256 geforce 256
sb live!
12x 40x dvd
Windows 2000 (service pak 3 w/ updates)

Ok.. so whats happeneing is that I 'll walk away from my computer and when i go back to it, I find that it's in stand by. No big deal. So I go to hit the keyboard and/or move the mouse and nothing happens. The computer doesn't respond. I need to reboot my computer.

I could disable standby, but I would like to use it. I leave my computer on all the time, so I need this feature.
I've tried hiberation and it performs the way that it should. And I've been into the power management tab and I've played witht the different settings, but to no avail.

what should I do? thanks guys!

is this a laptop?
if it is check the bios.

i'll assume it's not.

try hitting the spacebar. sometimes standby is key specific. i guess it depends on if you are turning the disks off when in standby. it could take a while for the system to start back up.

what options are you selecting for stand by?

It's a dell system.
As stated, moving the spacebar does nothing. Same with the mouse. I've waited as long as an half an hour and nothing!

The options are basically 20-30 minutes without computer use, then the sysytem goes into standby. Everythinh (hiberation, etc..) are turned off.

anyhelp would be appreciated.

The power button? Wouldn't this just cold boot my computer? And anyway.. it happens all the time.

thanks anyway...

You could check out your settings for power management in your BIOS. Maybe changing something in there will fix it. I had a similar problem. The other day I put my system (Win2000 SP3) into Stand By from the Shut Down Windows dialog box, just to see what would happen. It went right to sleep. I came back a while later and moved the mouse. Nothing. Hit some keys. Nothing. I walked away. I think it was awake when I came back...

Yeah, what the hell? When you do that in Win2000, even if it does just shut the system off, as long as you don't have apps open nothing gets screwed up. You'd never know you didn't shut down "properly". At least it's always been that way for me.
