In most cases, external devices have always been better than internals . . . especially for CDR and CDRW. The only negative is slightly more $$$ . . . but I have always found them worth it going back to SCSI 2. Now I have 1394 and USB 2 . . . and before the year is out we will have 1394b at 800.

The also allow for fewer cooling demands in the computer case. And they are easily transportable from machine to machine.

If the cheapie firewire cards are 1394a compliant, is there any point in spending the dough on name brand ones? They're twice as expensive, and it seems the expense is usually related to bundled software which I won't use: graphics etc. when all I want to do is run a CF media reader and an external drive.

What would you recommend. There is a US$25 "Xtend3000" 1394a card I can get locally.
