A month ago I had to replace the ignition coils on my 2000 Maxima. The car had 59,200 on the odo with 60k powertrain warranty, but only 36k bumper to bumper. Ignition coils are clearly, and in all cases, not covered under powertrain. I was out $309. Knowing that this is a common problem I wrote a carefully worded letter to Nissan Customer Service, including receipts of my purchase of the coils and the dealer's diagnosis of the problem. Specifically I referred to how often these coils have been going on earlier 5th gens and that I believed that it should be a recall item, since they are failing more than should be reasonably expected.

Well, I just got a call from them and as a one-time appreciation measure they will be sending me a cheque/check for $309. I only sent the letter on a dim hope, but looks like it paid out :) Nissan kicks ass!

Letter, if interested

Nice! Nissan rocks, but the Mazda 3 and 6 are looking mighty enticing for my next vehicle.

Nissan kicks ass!

I believe the above statements cancel each other out.

Well, lots of vehicles have had problems, but not all manufacturers agree to fix them free of charge! Nissan definitely didn't have to replace these - I was 23k PAST warranty!

In that case, Hyundai kicks ass too, since they give you a 10 yrs or 100K miles on their new vehicles (including a 5 yrs bumper to bumper).

I'm about to fill out a survery for a nissan dealer where my mom purchased a murano. The sales man said she could have the first 3 oil changes for free and free tank of gas at those oil changes.

When she went in for her first oil change the dealership said the sales manager said that salesman didn't work there anymore so she'd only get 1 oil change, no free gas. Then she asked him how come the MPG is like 20 when the window sticker said something like 22/25, he said, "you'll have to ask nissan, we're only salesmen here."

Nissan is going to get a nasty letter regarding this dealership.

A is the number of people who will die in Nissan vehicles because of engineering problems. B is the average cost of settling each of those claims. A times B equals C. If C is less than X, the cost of a recall, Skoorb gets free ignition coils.

This would be 10 times cooler if you actually signed the letter:

Sincerely,

Yep, if you have a TL, you'll probably be on your 5th transmission before you have to change an ignition coil :D

LOL! So true! you know its bad when the TL forum dedicates a seperate sub-forum for transmision problems. Granted, honda got that problem fixed quickly.

Isn't the coils problem on the Maxima due to supplier's fault and not Nissan's itself?

That is bad :)

Yeah the coil problem was the supplier issuing crap coils to Nissan.

Well then I guess Hyundai is a better vehicle than BMW, mercedes, audi, Toyota, Dodge, etc. etc. isn't it?! Point is in this case Nissan was WELL past their warranty period and although I think that their coils did indeed suck it was still super sweet that they were willing to do this for me.
