A month ago I had to replace the ignition coils on my 2000 Maxima. The car had 59,200 on the odo with 60k powertrain warranty, but only 36k bumper to bumper. Ignition coils are clearly, and in all cases, not covered under powertrain. I was out $309. Knowing that this is a common problem I wrote a carefully worded letter to Nissan Customer Service, including receipts of my purchase of the coils and the dealer's diagnosis of the problem. Specifically I referred to how often these coils have been going on earlier 5th gens and that I believed that it should be a recall item, since they are failing more than should be reasonably expected.
Well, I just got a call from them and as a one-time appreciation measure they will be sending me a cheque/check for $309. I only sent the letter on a dim hope, but looks like it paid out
Nissan kicks ass!
Letter, if interested
