I have to read the BIBLE over the summer for english AP? That kinda sucks, i dont really care that its relgious material, but from what ive heard its boring, and prolly even more boring since im not christian (or whatever). But isnt theres like laws against having kids read religious material in school or something? i mean im in california if anywhere i supposed they'd be here...?

Bah, get over it. I had to read the Bible, Greek Mythology, Norse mythology etc for English

Every author and their grandmother references these things...if you want to understand hardcore literature, it only makes sense to read them

they're probably referring as a historical text, and that's why you have to read it.

get a supplementary book (more reading!) that will help you understand it.

I'm surprised they'd assign the whole thing for a summer. There are a lot of read-it-in-a-year programs, but that's a lot of reading for the summer. Anyhow, some parts are boring as heck (the laws and stuff in Deuteronomy) and some's actually pretty interesting. There are things in the Bible that would get an AT thread locked faster than yakko nefs. I could see having you read selected books, some of it is actually quality literature in terms of style, especially some of the New Testament stuff.

[edit] As for the purpose in reading it, yeah, in terms of reading other literature, there's a TON of stuff you won't understand, or even notice as important, unless you understand the Biblical background. Allusions, metaphors, etc. As an English major, almost nothing we read and talk about escapes Greek myths and Biblical references.

Yup public school...but anyways i really dont give a crap its the bible or any other boring book .... its just the summer reading 🙁 but anyways just wanted to see what u guys thought

Instead of reading the bible i think ill go with this version: The Brick Testement

nope, the law says "teach it don't preach it".

i had to read it in high school, just genesis though since we were talking about creation myths.

that was actually pretty cool stuff, but i'm into myths (the whole greek stuff really appeals to me).

You're not in a very good mood today, are ya? 😉

Negative. The Supreme Court in 1960 says it's constitutional. It's good for allusions.
Are you in AP Language or AP Lit?

I'm in an excellent mood, and referring to yakko as a nef would probably be considered by him to be a compliment. 🙂

Get a copy of the Bible, a copy of the Cliff's notes, and a nice Mountain Dew. You'll be fine.

It's not illegal, nor should be, although it is really dry at parts.

[And Abraham begat Matthew begat... ZZzzzzzz]

ROFLOL at Abraham begat Matthew. That's so mixing parts up that it's hysterical. Or maybe it's just past one o'clock and I'm really really tired. Uh, I'll say goodbye now.

The bible is an interesting read. So what if its religous. As long as the teacher doesn't preach it, its fine with me.

The Bible is great. In college you can blow through a ton of Judaism- and Christianity-related courses because all they involve is reading that one book over and over again. You save money on books and the classes are even easier than usual since you alread know the material. It's a win-win situation. 😀

Abraham begat Matthew?

No. Abraham begat Isaac. Isaac begat Matthew. Get it straight. 😉

By the way, I love Deuteronomy.
