I just nabbed a couple Movies on BR from Best Buy for $18 a piece...

Snow White & Up were the ones I got.

For $18 I get the BR copy, a DVD version, and a "digital copy" for whatever that is worth. A year or two ago even the DVD's were still selling for close to that much.

That's quite a value if you ask me. I've been one of the grumpy ones about the cost of BR movies, but I have to give Disney credit for bucking the trend.

Warning- I am not crapping the thread.

On 10/10/09 I bought the Snow White BD/DVD (not sure about the digital copy) from Amazon for ~$13. they had some kind of code you entered at checkout for $10 off. Think they had something similar for Up as well.

Here's the breakdown.

Item(s) Subtotal: $19.99
Shipping & Handling: $2.98
Promotion Applied: -$10.00
-----
Total Before Tax: $12.97
Estimated Tax: $0.00
-----
Grand Total: $12.97.

We gave it to my daughter for christmas. Only watched it once but I didn't think the quality was that good for a BD. But I only half way paid attention to it because we were doing other things.

So, I agree with you about the cost of these discs. Not sure if what I got was more due to Disney or Amazon?

Disney is a bunch of evil, greedy bastards.
If you get one of their movies cheap, its because the reseller wanted you to have it cheap. Disney had little to do with it. I actually like the idea that in a few more years Snow White will become public domain and then they wont be able to control it or make a profit off it any more. Unless of course they influence the lawmakers to extend copyright. Which is totally possible.

Snow White won't be in the public domain until 2036, if you want to wait that long. Copyright duration in the US is the creator's life plus 70 years after death. I'm curious what will happen though because in most other countries, copyright is life + 50 years. So Disney's works would technically become public domain in 2016 in places like Canada and Japan.

Congrats on finding them that cheap, but thats thanks to Best Buy, not Disney. Disney has on average the most expensive Blu-Rays of any studio.

And you get your monies worth IMO. BRD, DVD and digital copy all for ~$30, a ~$5 premium over the other stduios who regularly only provide the BRD. This way I can keep the BRD safe for viewing on the main AV setup, let the kids use the DVD for their room(which almost certainly will get trashed) and have the digital copy on hand so they can put it on their portable media devices for road trips(yes, I could easily do that with the DVD version reencoding it anyway, but now I don't have to bother).

Hell, GWtW is $40 for the bare bones version that doesn't even come with any special features let alone a format bundle, I think in comparison that Disney is offering a pretty good deal even at MSRP.

One thing to consider about older movies like snow white released on blu-ray is that the original film used was not up to modern standards. To get a really good blu-ray they would have to process all the drawings over again, and they do not have them, they were sold off over the years. The best you can do with older films is to enhance the colors and remove any dust or scratches .

Disney has an archival system now where they take original drawings and digitally capture them for long term storage at 16MP per image but that has only been the last 5 years or so. Everything before them is a film transfer.

If you are a big buyer of disney/pixar movies check out the disney movie club. I joined it last year and they have some really good deals. I can often get movies like snow white for $12-14 . Less popular titles sell for $10

Disney's Snow White will never be public domain based on current law because the charactor of Snow White, like all the rest of Disney's characters, are trademarked as well as copyrighted. As long as Disney uses them for business purposes, their trademark lasts in perpetuity. Now this isn't entirely accurate, because the movie itself will eventually go into public domain, but since the characters are trademarked the movie becomes useless to people hoping to exploit them for business reasons.

Just picked up Toy Story 1 & 2 BR & DVD combo packs for $8 a piece at Target. Plus I think there's a mail in rebate if you already own them on DVD or VHS bringing the total even lower.

They were $23 each. So $46. Ten dollars off from Target so $36. Then Disney had a $10 coupon for each one bringing the total down to $16. $8 each.

Score! I guess some people were getting them for even less @ Toys R Us.

yeah 1937 tape transfer to Blue Ray isn't going to look much better then DVD anyway.

But, the real sad part is, when your daughter drops it or forgets to put it back in it's case and scratches the media. Your screwed! At least with a DVD you could have ripped it...

With my Media Tank. I pretty much threw out my DVD player. If I have to physically get up and put in a disk it's a waste of time. Even more of a waste of time is searching for a Disk that you wanted to play.

Oh well. One day all movies will be online 'on demand' kinda like netflix, but a million more movies... Then if you want to watch a movie you just pay the 5.99 monthly fee to watch whatever you want.

Ahem...dual pack. Blu Ray + DVD (and a lame "digital copy") are all included.

did you click to enlarge? its not a tape transfer, there is detail there, but its subtle. if your tv or setup is lousy, you might miss out on it. its certainly superior to the dvd which has sh*t for detail.

waste of time? i disagree, if i have to watch a film i can spend the 30 seconds to toss the dvd into the drive, and frankly its even less since i only watch rentals anyways. watching films isn't equivalent to ipod jukebox use, or at least it shouldnt. the effort to setup and feed that media tank is better off spent watching films.

Yeah I looked... To be honest... DVD's are fine (for me) for these types of movies. It's much better then sat or cable SD feed.

I disagree about the media tank. I'm not gonna waste my time feeding a DVD player. A friend of mine brought over a DVD, I was like Pffft, what do you want me to do with that? ;) I already had it in my library. Having access to thousands of movies with out getting off the couch ... Priceless!

I'll go for a BR/DVD 400 disk changer for $500. It stores cover art and has a built in browser and organizer.

400 BR's @ 40 GB a pop is 16TB. You can't build a PC with a fraction of that storage for anywhere close to the price.

makes no sense either, unless ur rich and hire some techboy to do all the ripping for you its a whole lot of work to save the 30 seconds to pop in a disc for watching a film.
its simply ridiculously unnecessary.
esp if all that effort is used to rip in dvd, a totally obsolete format:p

but 400 BR's @ even 10$ A POP IS 4K.... i could easily build a server with 16TB for under 4k, rent from netflix and have the same library in a year at a fraction of the cost (not saying its legal, but whats stopping someone from doing it?)

or you could just rent a bluray and watch it as you go along, instead of trying to pretend its an investment:p

I think some people are missing the point. If you are going to buy a Blue-Ray, it certainly is an added value to get a DVD version AND a digital copy in the package.

The fact that you COULD rent the movie doesn't seem very relevant to that point.
