I currently have a MSI MS 8817 which is a Geforce 2 MX 32mb nvidia. I have o get a new (dont ask why please, it is a long story) I am happy with the performance but if i have to spend the money on a new what should i get. I would like something with the same feaures or better, i do play games on the internet like tribes 2.
Thanks

How about the MSI-8820 from newegg? I have one and it works great. The price is down to $112 plus $10 shipping for a good quality Geforce 2 GTS with 32 mb of 6ns ram. Shoot, that is about what I paid for my A-Open 256MX a few months a ago. If you are willing to up the ante a bit, newegg has the MSI 831 Geforce 2 Pro with 64 mb of 5.5ns ram for $142 plus $10 shipping. Others might suggest the ATI Radeon LE or Kyro II, but I like the Nvidia Geforce 2 for the performance, price and compatibility.

Check out nVNews.net, they link up all the nV reviews etc....

Canopus has their new X20 coming out. It looks pretty sweet; copper plates on memory chips, Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor is used for the cooling fan, not based on the reference design, and increased 2D quality in high res (1600x1200+).

I second the 64MB Pro from newegg, at that price you can't go wrong especially once you overclock it, should be able to get near-Ultra performance from it.

why do you have to get a new one?

lol

go for GF2 Ultra, worth the extra $, I think you'll be happy with the performance gain

I would like to spend around $100 but will consider more if it is worth it. Here's why i have to get a new one. Gateway sent me a replacement card and I was supposed to send the old one back, well between me and my wife we have lost it, and now gateway wants there video card or about $80 bucks. Since i cant find it looks like i am going to fork out some cash. So my thought is why not upgrade my video card. also can yall explain all the Geforce, TNT, GTS NVDIA etc... what do these terms mean
thanks

I would go for the MSI 831 Geforce II GTS Pro at newegg or microbarn. 140 about. Great card. I don't think the ULTRA is worth the price as of yet, and besides, that is well over twice what you wanted to spend

NVIDIA = video card and motherboard (oh so very soon) chipset manufacturer. ATI is another company, 3dfx used to be another, etc

GEFORCE GTS/TNT, etc = Name given to generations of graphics processing unit cores made by companies like NVIDIA. Other companies, (MSI, HERCULES, etc) use these chipsets to make their own cards. So, if you get MSI 831, it is made by MSI, but used NVIDIA's chipset technology, which in this case is the GEFORCE II GTS PRO core. ATI is responsible for RADEON, RAGE, etc. Any card with these on it will be made by ATI, since they don't liscense their technology out to other manufacturers.

Back to my recommendation. You can get this card for around 140. Mine should come tomorrow. I'm so excited. Newegg says it comes with 5.5ns memory, but it seems that it is actually shipping with 5ns memory clocked at 400MHz. Great deal. The pro is an improvement over the regular GEFORCE II GTS because it helps the memory bandwidth limiting problems of the GFII GTS. The cores are the same, but are "hand picked" to reach higher clock speeds. Hope at least one word of this helped.

It allows you to output the signal from your video card to a "normal" tv. Resolution isn't the greatest. (text hard to read) but there are some uses. I don't have much experience with it, so you may want to talk to others on its uses

Gun Nut, There are a few other places on the Web that have had the 831 for about the same price. Try CDR Express or Microbarn.
I got mine from Newegg about a month ago, and it's great. I haven't seen anything comparable in terms of value and performance, and I read the Hot Deals forum all the time! 😀
