I have to bite the bullet and finally make myself build a new computer

My old computer is starting to fail and I am becoming frustrated trying to play BF2 on my three year old system. This is what I am planning for my new computer. Pls critique any area, nothing is set in stone ( well, only the parts I have already purchased 😀).

Mobo and Vid- eVGA 133-K8-NF41 + eVGA 7800GT - $379 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813188002)

CPU- Amd Opteron - 189 @ zoomfly ( currently backordered)

Anyone know of any other places where I can pick this up ( places that have reasonable prices)?

Ram- Corsair Value Ram 3200 ( something like that) Got 2 gigs of it for ~135 (after rebates). The deal is in the hot deals forum some where.

HD- Hitachi 7k80 80 GB - $53.50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822145082

Case- Antec Super Lanboy - ~40 in hot deals

PS- Fortron Ax500- A - $80

Do I need a 500 for my system or can I get away with a 450? I am only planning on one harddrive, dvd-burner, dvd-rom.

Now for a soundcard and dvd-rom burner I have no idea what to get. For sound I just need something that will work well with playing BF2. For dvd-burning I just want something that is reliable.

Thanks for your time.

You should be able to get away with 450. Soundcard consider an Audigy 2 ZS for cheap or the $10 SB Live card in ATHD. DVD burner can be any burner from Fry's or local B&M stores. They tend to have fairly good deals weekly for DVD burner.

Neutralizer- so overall does it look good? Should I wait to build this for a new AMD platform that might be coming around the horizon? Or is the 939 socket still safe and smart decision for a low to midrange user like myself?

Thanks

Socket 939 is definitely the cheap alternative, however, if you want to be a bit more future-minded and leave yourself an upgrade path, you can wait until AM2 is out. I, however, only upgrade once every 2-4 years, so I could careless about future-proofing.

Need 2Gs of ram to play BF2 decently

Edit oops sorry saw that you have that there looks pretty good and what do you mean by 450 watts? Yes I think you would be ok only using 450 but make sure the PSU you get a reliable and have good efficency

don't buy that mobo and vid card package.... youc an get a 7800gt for $300 and a much better mobo for around $100- $20 more for a non crappy mobo

I was thinking about getting an Antec True Blue 480 for the power supply since Compusa has a good rebate on it. Is this a good move?

Also, since I use very little hard drive space, should I think about picking up a WD raptor 36gb. Would it be a good idea to use the raptor for OS/Games and if I needed it, a larger HD for media and what not?

Thanks!

Hamilton

What about an aftermarket cooler like the zalman 9500 LED for that opteron? You are gonna overclock it right? Otherwise what's the point of getting an opteron?

Good point, but I thought that the stock HSF was pretty good to begin with... I am not gonna do any extreme ocing, but I will keep that in mind.

Well if the stock HSF is good enough for your needs then you can stick with that. As far as the 36GB raptor, I would personally run out of space on that fast. I ran out of space on my old 80GB pretty fast too and I thought it would be enough at the time but it wasn't. Do you plan on switching to windows vista when it comes out? To be honest I don't know how much room that will take but it's something to keep in mind.
