this is very strange
i was at this one website downloading files.. and all of a sudden.. my comp restarts by itself! when the computer restarts.. i can hear the hardrive start to spin again.. so i gues it stopped spinning...
also when i watch the simpsons budwieser wazzaaaap videoclip.. it does the exact same thing..
my system specs are
asus cuv4x
p3 733 (not overclocked)
maxtor 40gig 7200rpm
windows 2000 (NTSF)
128 megs or ram
250watt antec ps
phillips acoustic edge

cant be the heat.. cause the temps are very slow.. around 30c mobo and cpu, vid card is at 40c
thanx!

it COULD be ACPI. are you familiar with this? it's basically win2k allowing irq sharing. i had some random reboot problems that went away when i disabled this. it's annoying, cause when you turn your comp. back from acpi to "standard pc" it will re-find all your hardware, but if you have some time (and all your drivers) it's worth it. i'm off to find you a link on how to disable it...

i'm quoting this from Insane3D

"Right click on "My Computer and choose "Properties". Click on the "Hardware" tab and click on the "Device Manager" button. Click on the "+" next to "Computer". Double click on the item that appears under "Computer" and click on the "Driver" tab. Click on "Update Driver" and click "Next" in the box that comes up. Choose "Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver". In the box that comes up, choose "Show all hardware of this device class". In the new window that opens, choose "Standard PC" and follow the prompts to reboot. When you reboot, it will "see" all your hardware again, so make sure you have all your drivers ready. Also, when you are done, go back into the "Device Manager" and make sure under "Computer" you have only one "Standard PC" showing"

this came from thisthread. do a search here on anandtech forums for "acpi" and you'll find lots and lots of info.

also, check this for a description of what's up with ACPI (mind you, this FAQ implies that you cannot disable ACPI w/out re-installing win2k..but this is NOT true..just follow what is in quotes above)

hope this leads you in the right direction

oh wow.... thanx a grip for your help...
yeah.. i looked at the system configs and saw which hardware was sharing irq's... i found out that my soundcard, videocard, ethernet card and usb ports all share the same IRQ~!!!..

ACPI is *not* going to cause reboots.

IRQ sharing with ACPI is normal, it's expected, and it works fine.

Why everyone is so gung-ho to disable ACPI (in this unsupported method, to boot) is beyond me.

If your W2K system is rebooting, it's either hardware, or the machine is blue screening. I'm betting you're blue screening. Check the system event log for events from SAVEDUMP.

This page explains why it's a bad idea to change HALs the way sohcrates suggests.

I realize sohcrates and others have experienced no problems with this technique, but it upsets me that ppl are recommending actions that could have dire consequences without explaining what those consequences could be.

hmmmm.. i changed the thing to standard pc.. i reinstalled all my drivers, and one thing i did notice was my sound card/divx problem was fixed!... for some reason my divx played with really bad sound quality.. and i thought it was becuase everything including my soundcard videocard and stuff was using irq 9....
so far my comps been running very stable.. no reboots yet.. so.. im not sure if this fixed the reboot prob or not

edit: oh yeah.. no blue screens.. none at all.. i will be doing something.. and all of a sudden.. bayam.. hd stops spinning and my comp reboots.
